I’ve been into motorcycles for over 40 years now and have owned a variety of machines both road and dirt. I spent 6 years racing road bikes in my 20’s and have built a few harleys since then.
Recently I purchased (well almost stole lol) a 1998 TRX300FW in the hope of restoring it to use for bowhunting.
It’s pretty messy and will need a bit of TLC, but the chassis is straight and it’s pretty much complete minus a seat and a muffler. The previous owner told me it had no spark and that’s about all the information I had.
I brought it home and set it up in the shed where it will stay as I go through the process of bringing it back to an acceptable condition.
So far I’ve torn it down to the chassis and engine and have spent a little time checking the wiring. I’d like to get it running at least before I dive into the running gear etc.
I found the no spark cause. The neutral and reverse plugs on the lower side of the case were around the wrong way. There could be something more to this as I was wondering why someone would do that??? I installed them correctly and now have a spark. I read though a number of threads here and have gone through the manual and checked all of the fault finding steps.
The next step I took was the fuel system. I stripped down the carb and cleaned it up and reinstalled. Checked all lines were clear, checked tank and petcock, put some fuel in and cranked…
hmm…
Did a bit more reading on the forum, checked timing, checked valve clearance. She still cranks away nicely but no bang.
Cleaned carby again… (noticed that she does overflow if I leave the petcock open)
Anyway, I guess I’ll keep reading through for more ideas as it’s sorta got me stumped at the moment. I didn’t really expect a single cylinder 300cc engine to be this tricky 😉
Some great info here, thanks
