Front Diff – very dirty fluid

So I changed my fluids yesterday, new oil, oil filter, and decided to change out the front diff fluid while I was in the garage. I have a couple of trips coming up and figured I would do this while I had a day off before hunting season.

That front diff fluid came out so grey – it makes me nervous to see. I changed the fluid at 27 hours and 300 something miles, and now I have 60 hours and 710 miles. The oil was dark and a little stinky, but not bad… But the front diff was just as bad as it was the first change. And when I did that first service, I actually changed the fluid, took it out for a spin to engage the AWD, then changed it again. Both changes saw dirty grey fluid. I don’t know why I thought this one would be better, but I guess I was hoping to see some improvement over the February break in service.

Talking to a friend of mine and mentioned this, he tells me he has never changed his! So, I shouldn’t worry about this so much? Or is this one of the ones that I will be changing that 9oz of fluid twice a year for the rest of it’s life?
