Wrapping your headers might cool your leg down some..but it also traps more heat close to the motor = HEAT very bad for motors. Hello people.. heat on your leg is NORMAL..its the headers dissipating heat…you are sitting on a motor you know?
The Risks
Exhaust wrapping is not without its risks. First, the higher exhaust exit temperatures can lean out the fuel mixture of an engine — sometimes severely. An overly lean situation can lead to rapid engine failure. Thus, wrapped pipes may necessitate either re-jetting or a change in mapping depending on your bike’s fuel management system.
There is also a real risk of header and pipe damage due to excessive heat build-up. There are numerous reports of split and cracked exhausts that can be attributed to the use of exhaust wrap
IF your Sportsman gets so hot that its burning your leg or melting plastic then TAKE IT IN!! you have other issues, like a blockage or lean condition. Don’t hide the problem by wrapping it up you will do more damage!
..And lastly don’t tell me NASCAR or other powersports places wrap headers..cuz I know..they also tune for it and rebuild after every race.
