If you’ve researched lighted whips, I bet you’ve come across the 5050 and 3528 LED strips. I really didn’t fell like spending a small fortune on a single color, non-multi-functional whip, so I got on eBay and ordered the parts.
I used the 5 meter waterproof 3528 LED strip for my build, (more LEDs per length, the 5050 are larger LEDs but less per foot). Then, I wrapped them around a 6′ Firestik™ antenna. I chose to wrap the strip as densely as possible and got right at 4′ of coverage on the 6′ whip. This will be perfect for me so that I can attach my 2’x3′ pirate flag at the top. 4′ of LEDs and a large flag, I like it! Then, with 3/4" clear heat-shrink, I sealed the deal.
I haven’t mounted it yet, but I can tell you, I wasn’t expecting such a small threaded portion at the bottom of the pole. The Firestik™ is designed around being a CB antenna and they use a smaller diameter threaded portion as well as being pretty short on threads. The threaded section is only 5/16" long and 3/8" in diameter, so I’ll probably use a heavy duty mount spring from Firestik™ with a roll bar style attachment, if I can find a roll bar bracket with a small enough hole for the whip. Otherwise, I will use a flat surface style CB antenna mount to bolt through my stock Polaris roof. There are several options/styles available.
In the video you can see the colors and functions in action. I’m running the whip from a wall plug since I don’t have it wired and installed on the RZR yet, but you’ll get the idea. If you have questions, post them, and I’ll answer with my input.
