Boy these old Recons are some tough old birds. We bought this ’99 a couple summers ago and my kid has been relentless on it. Last time we were out it seized up and after the tear down I noticed a few things.
First, the oil chain popped off the pump sprocket and you can imagine what happened after that. I also noticed metal pieces on the bottom of the crankcase. After some looking, I’ve determined some of the fragments are the little circlips that are supposed to be on the clutch.
And the oil filter. I guess that hunk of crud is metal particles that got caught on it. So I’m doing a full tear down and splitting the cases to get to that oil filter screen too. I can only imagine what’s caught up in it.
Not a single complaint out of this thing the whole time. Started every time, ran every time. So I’m gearing up now with a new oil pump chain, timing chain, clutch parts, etc.
