I recently sold my TW200 Yamaha Trailbike and purchased a 2007 Polaris X2 500 EFI HO from a person in Grand Junction, Colorado. I bought it as I decided that my wife would be safer on rough trails on the back of the ATV rather than the back of the bike as we are both retired.
The ATV is surprisingly more fun than I expected it would be and it is nice that it can also do some work. However, it has been a learning experience. We have been on two rides. The first ride we almost got stranded because of the throttle adjustment being wrong was sometimes shutting down the spark when stranded. I figured out how to properly adjust that before the 2nd ride.
On the 2nd ride I experienced a different problem. After riding for an hour or two with things getting fairly warm but no overheating lights and then stopping the ATV would not start. I checked and it had spark but did not have gas. After waiting for about 1/2 hour it would start again. Then as we reached the parking lot to load up on the trailer it stalled while running and the same thing — it would not start again. It would start for a second and then die. I checked the plug and it was dry and clean – no gas.
My wife is not afraid that we will get stranded on the next ride. So, here is what I have done so far — new plug (but that is not the problem), new air cleaner and pre-filter (but the old one was good), new fuel filter (but the old one was not restricted), checked the vent tube (not restricted), replaced the fuel pump (new one specs are 41psi), dumped all of the gas and will refill with high octane, replaced the heat shield on the bottom of the gas tank. I’m going to purge the exhaust. The coolant and radiator look to be good. The fan did come on a few times when stopping at idle.
I’m wondering what else I should check before I reassemble everything. I found a good price on an ECM and am thinking that perhaps I should replace that. I had a similar problem once with an XR650 Honda Motorcycle and it was the ECM (it was erratic). I also had the ECM fail on my snowmobile but when that happened it was dead (not erratic).
I’m sure that there is tons of knowledge on this forum so any thoughts that you have will be appreciated. The machine runs great when running and I just wish that the starting would be reliable. Also, I talked to the local dealer and there are not any recalls on that machine and they are not familiar with the problem nor did they offer any suggestions.
