CVT Belt Drive

I do not have a lot of experience with the various brands of ATV’s. I do know, however, that most of them have a belt-type CVT drive. Honda has gears. I would like to know what is so bad about a belt drive. I assume the drive ratio is controlled by a rocker switch on the handlebar or foot control. Having infinite control of the drive ratio seems like a big advantage. You could fine tune the ratio that you want easily on the go. I have heard it mentioned that the belt does wear out. How big of a problem is this? If it lasts 10 years or so under normal use, that seems acceptable to me, especially if the drive has been designed in such a way that it is not too difficult to change the belt. How well does a belt perform when you are towing a heavy load? Any other advantages or disadvantages?
