Check Engine Limp Home Mode – 2009 800r X

Good Morning forum people!!

So I’ve been chasing down a cooling problem on my ATV since beginning of last season. I finally found a way to correct that with a combination of richening the fuel (Muzzy Pro Tuner) a fan controller, and flushing the coolant where I found some nasty looking jelly like stuff.

Well now the bike is doing a new things where after about 2 hours of riding the check engine light displays on the screen, as well as the ‘Limp Home Mode’ message. The only thing is, it’s not in limp mode. I still have full throttle and the bike feels as good as it always does.

So I did a search on both this and the other forum and found that a common problem is 1. Fuel Pressure, and 2. Gear indicator sensors.

I’ve ordered a new fuel pump and will replace that as soon as it gets here.

My question is on the 2nd topic. The 3 gear indicator sensors. How exactly do you go about cleaning them? Do you have to physically remove the sensors? Or just snap off the Oeitker clamp and remove the connector?

Lastly, the manual suggests spraying on some electrical insulation paint/varnish. What is everyone using for that? I’ve gone to both the local hardware store and the local Lowe’s and at both places the guy looked at me like I was an idiot. I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard of this stuff before.

Other than that, is there anything else anyone can think of that could be the problem with this check engine light?

I’ve tried to pull the code but I’ve never been able to get that screen to come up but maybe 2 times. And it’s always after the bike has been shut off so the code is cleared.

I’m taking our first trip to Hatfield McCoy at the end of the month and I really want this thing running tip top before then.

The bike has 4350 miles on it, and aside from the overheating issue has been an awesome machine. I just wish I could figure this out.
