Hello all, just recently picked up a yamaha kodiak 400 4×4, 2002. I think I got it for a steal because it was one owner, who was 65 and drive it just up the driveway to get mail and back. So very low hours (even though there is no gauge).
Any how here are my issues which for the price I don’t really mind a few fixes ( I paid 1500 for this like new cosmetically quad). It’s worth mentioning I think she passed so it has been sitting for about a year (in a heated garage).
Issues are as follows:
1. Horrible cold start (and I mean cold right nite all it’s 35F) so not really that cold.
2. Backfiring more often than it should.
3. It will stall unless I have the choke at full for about 2 mins. Then halfway for about 5 more. Our it will stall.
4. I heard some very faint knocking in the engine.
5. Carb reside nite in plug
6.
I enclosed a pictured if the spark plug and air filter.wanted to get your opinions if the plug indicats lean or rich. The plug is not wet but is black, probably carbon fouling. I checked and the gap is correct as what started in my manual. I also cannot tell if the air filter is stock and if I need a new one. Her was what I was going to do. So let me know if I should ot not do what I’m about to do.
1. Empty tank and out fresh 93 octane in. Also add assume seafoam.
2.change add plug with correct gap
3 clean carb
4 clean air filter and re oil
5. Clean spark plug
6. After cold start it ramps up in idle speed almost so much I can’t shift.
So am I running lean or rich as per picture? And is it the fuel or oxygen which I’m getting to much of.
Thanks any help would be great! Have a great weekend!

New to the ATV life and purchased this machine a few weeks ago. The owner stated that the machine had been sitting in his garage for about two years ever since he rolled it down a hill. I knew this was going to be a fixer up unit, however the machine has plenty of power and I can run up the road at 45 mph easily but it smokes, white blue smokes that smells of oil. I have serviced the engine oil and filter with no change. Any suggestions as to what to do next?
Hi. I’m new to this Forum. I have a 2005 Kodiak 400, which I have had since brand new. Last week, I noticed that the electric start was having problems. I could start with the rope, but the electric start did not work. I replaced the battery. That did not help. when I got home, I put a charger on the battery. Next day, the electric start worked…. for a couple of hours, then then it would not work again. Again, I put the battery charger on, and that helps… for a while. I am thinking that the battery is not charging. So, I’ve been looking around, and I find this has a rectifier/regulator. I want to check out the rectifier/regulator, to see if it is okay. However, I don’t know if I know where to look. I have looked at on-line parts diagrams to find it. However, I can’t find a rectifier/regulator on my ATV where the diagram says it should be. So, my first question today is…… where do I find the rectifier/regulator? What do I need to remove to find it? TIA for any help you can give.
My family all rides Yamaha’s and dad is a cheap old guy that refuses to upgrade his 1998 kodiak… runs like a top until last week when trying to disengage the 4×4 it went about 20 feet forward before it disengaged… anyhow when it does disengage it pops loud… you can feel it beneath you and hear it… kind sound like a ball joint on an old truck when they went and you tried to go around a corner… if anyone knows what im talking about it almost hurts to hear that noise… quad maybe has 2000 miles on it… i gotta get it fixes as he’s now riding my 12 grizzly 700 which leaves me with nothing lol
i should add it’s the on command 4×4 system with no diff lock… also the bike has always had a problem engageing into park… you have to rock the machine to get the park light to come on so that you can start it not sure if these two things are linkined…
dad always ties down his quad in his pick up but not very well… im afraid he leaves it in park which can’t be good on the roads he travels
Hey just got my first quad 2004 Kodiak 450 Took it out last weekend ran great no problems at all. Drove home about an hour after riding it. Dropped it off the truck. Sat for awhile. Tried starting it up to park it and it wouldn’t start. Starter turns motor over really fast no problem. First thought the starter selinoid wasn’t popping out to turn over the motor but when I put my hand on the exhaust I can feel air barely moving. What could have happened? Something from dropping it off the truck? Valves? No bad noises. Would appreciate some help thanks
