Anyways, I always like to stop in muddy areas and wander around with Boris, and see whats been out and about. I’m positive I came across bear tracks, and leaning towards a Grizzly cub over a black bear. The reason I believe this is how close the toes are together, and they are linear. Elk tracks next to the "supposed" grizzly.
Rode about 25 miles, checking on the larches (tamaracks) changing color (their needles), overcast. Aspen are done, but larches are later season. I rode out of the garage, 3 miles to NF boundary, then in the deep forest. You can pick out larches by look at pic of Boris on the griz, taken from the back. They are yellow needles vs the evergreens.
1st and 3rd pic are a front paw.
2nd pic is a rear paw slipping and sinking in mud.
Didn’t want to keep hijacking a thread, so I thought I’d start a new one.
What are you hunting and what are you packing?
For elk, I am using my .300 win mag. I want my bullet to stay flat in the brush, and want that elk down. If you haven’t hunted elk, they are one tough critter to drop, they run up mountains bleeding out.
The last thing in the world I expected to see today out boating on Flathead Lake, was a black bear island hopping. This is the largest lake West of the Mississippi River, but littered with really cool islands.
The video is of him going to an island, and I incorrectly say he is lost. I also am wrong about his age, he is not a cub. If you notice in the pic’s, he is going to a different shore, island. We drove around the island and sure as heck, he got back in water, and kept swimming east across the lake to another island.
Sorry for bad quality video.

Did some grouse hunting today with Boris. Mainly killing time and waiting until elk rifle season here in MT. I like to grouse hunt for the meat, a real tasty treat. It was the 1st time with Boris, he is 15 months, but real good instincts and he had a blast. Got 4 ruffs, was hoping for a dusky, but oh well. It was a beautiful day to cruise the Northwestern deep woods of Montana! The tamarack tree’s are getting ready to change, only evergreen tree (spruce, pine, fur) to loose their needles in the winter. They turn orange/yellow, and fall off. Enjoy! Oh and I used my little single shot .20 gauge. Had my .41 mag on my hip in case a real grizzly out to ruin my day.
After passing on a cow elk opening weekend of archery i called in a little spike bull .. The shot got lung so he didn’t suffer for long and only went about 30 yards before he expired… He will be some good eating for sure… I usually just use the Grizzly to drag them out as some of you have seen in posts for past years but he was easy to get to and it was a cool day so i told my partner i wanted to load him like we have had to do occasionally in years past but didn’t get pics.. I have mentioned on here about standing the Grizz on it’s but and using ratchet straps to hold him(elk) to the rack and then pull the front end back down then just adjust and finish tying down and hauling out.. So any way here are some pics of the bull and i along with loading it on the grizz and on to truck… It was a great day just being the mountains and time with friend and my gal, who happened to shoot her very first grouse ever….What a Gal !!!!!!!!! Enjoy the pics..
Looking at buying a Monterra for the Griz. There are mixed reviews out there with many stating there are just too many software issues with these units, making them unreliable. Has anybody owned one of these and can comment?? Thanks
Well it is that time again and i finally went and pulled some SD cards… Here is a few pics….. I named one of the bulls Bent 6….. Guess which one …..lol… The last pic is after a bear drooled and chewed and changed the view of the camera………..
