400ex Hotcam valve adjustment??

Alright.. so since the day I bought my 400ex, it has had a noisy valve tick due to the hotcam inside it. I have tried everything to eliminate this tick… I went back to stock (.04in .05ex), i went to what was recommended by a few on various forums (.05in .06ex) and I went to what someone supposedly was told from one of the guys at Hotcams inc (.08in .10ex… that’s ridiculous)!
So far the quietest it was ever at was .05in .06ex but there was still a noticeable tick!
Is there any right spec or do i have to keep guessing and pulling apart the valve covers over and over until i get it right? Or is this only something that’s going to go away if I get rid of my stock valve springs? Please help guys… I just did a rebuild on my 400 and I don’t want to hear this awful valve tick anymore :icon_ cry:
Maybe i should just let my local honda dealer take care of it *sigh*…

help asap (300ex issues)

i have got a 2004 300ex. it has a white brothers full system and a uni filter. its jetted at a 40 pilot and 125 main. here is a list of a few problems im having.

1) i have some trouble getting it started.

2) once i do get it started, the rpm is very low, but after warming up 5-6 minutes, the rpm rises.

3) after warming up 5-6 minutes, i try to crack the throttle, bog bog bog.

4) when i finally get it to rev, when i let off the throttle, goes back to its high idle… but a little higher.

5) midrange stinks. when i hold the throttle at a certain spot, it sputters and doesnt sound like a clean rev.

its not lean. checked plug. the very tip of the plug is dark brown. the part under that is black. the part under that is dark brown. and the ring around all of that is black. that may be hard to understand but im having trouble uploading a picture.

anyway, im wondering if all of this is jetting, valves needing adjustment, cdi? not sure at all. ill give anymore info if needed.

any help/advice accepted. thanks.

strange electronic shifting problem

I know this issue has been discussed many times over but despite reading countless threads I’m still having issues.

I have a ’99 TRX450ES, I’ve just recently started experiencing shifting problems.

If I’m riding along the ESP goes into error mode displaying —.

It usually happens just while cruising in gear, not so much while changing gear or under any type of heavy load the ESP will just randomly come up with the —.

I’ve taken the gears apart in the shift motor, cleaned them and re-lubricated them.

I also took the angle sensor out and tested with my multi meter. It seemed to get really high readings when moved between the ‘N’ and 5th position so I thought this was the culprit. I just put the new one in today but still experiencing the same problem.

It sometimes becomes unresponsive all together rather than displaying — i’ll be in gear and try to change but the buttons do not respond at all, this mainly happens while I’m in 5th. It continues to display ‘5’ but I can not get it to change. By pressing the buttons, no noises are heard from the shift motor either like its attempting to change.

I’ve also noticed that while I have the ignition on sometimes when I cycle through the gears between ‘5’ and ‘N’ all I get is the — display. You can hear the shift motor change through the gears though.

Other than that whilst its running it works fine, can go through the gears normally.

When ever a fault occurs I just cycle the ignition switch and the ESP goes back to normal.

It seems like an electrical issue to me, maybe with the gear position sensor, I’ll run through the trouble shooting with that to confirm.

I’ve also put a new battery in it because the old one was stuffed.

Any ideas or something I’m missing?

Clicking noise and smoke out of exhaust

Okay so someone (not me) swamped my atv pretty bad and since then it’s been making this clicking sound in the motor. The clicking speeds up with the Rpms and sounds like it’s coming from to top of the motor where the valves are. A buddy of mine says it could just be the valves need an adjustment. Anyone with any suggestions what to check or know what’s wrong is deeply apprieated. And I won’t like anyone ride it from now on lol I have a video of the clicking on my iPhone and it won’t upload it so if you want to watch it I can send it to you via email. Thanks!!

Rincon valves

My valves on my rincon are always tapping. I will adjust them and they will be quiet for maybe 50 miles or even less then go back to tapping again. Any idea on what’s going on? I am getting tired of taking everything apart and adjusting them all the time
