no clue wht to do

I brought a 87 Honda 250x. When I brought it the guy said it sat outside for a while. It had some rust in the gas tank. So I rode it for awhile no problem at all. I finaly got around to cleaning the gas tank out, got all the rust out rebuilt the carb. Now wont start. I have no clue why. I put in new spark plug.. any idea?. Its my first quad so I could have messed up the rebuild, I did it with a friend of mine he only done it once.

Did something stupid, did I wreck it?

Hello! Hoping you can give me some advice, I’m entirely new to ATV’s.
I recently obtained a 2000 Fourtrax 300 4WD in absolutely perfect condition. It’s just like new and clean – literally! I knew the previous owner well, he purchased it new, rode it just a couple times just around the block and then let it sit eight years. In 2008 I changed the oil and drained the gas, fired right up. Then it sat again for seven years until a few months ago when I got it. At most it may have about 15 hours use (no odo/gauges). So I drained the gas again this year, changed the battery, plug and air filter, fired right up! Then changed the oil after it warmed up a bit and it runs amazing, just like a brand new machine. I’m very fortunate to have come across this machine.
That being said, here’s my stupid part and I’m really p%$&#d off at myself! I put the oil filter in backward. I drove it for an hour or so without knowing this, thankfully I drove it very nicely as it needs to be broken in. The oil light never came on and it was running perfectly. I was in third gear and it just suddenly made a kinda metallic squeal and just stopped dead and skidded to a halt. I was baffled! I tried to start it but could hear the engine was tight so I towed it home and Googled away. Thankfully I found this forum which led me to check the filter. I corrected it, changed the oil again (which still looked clean) and tried to start it. At first it turned over slowly but after it turned over a couple times it fired up and ran perfectly. It now turns over and starts normally. Talk about relief that it isn’t seized but I can’t believe I did that.
It may be paranoia but there is a noise in the engine that I question. I don’t know if it was there before or not. Sitting at idle, under load or cruising along there’s no odd noises. I have not given it full throttle as I don’t want to blow it up just in case. However if it’s revving and I let off the throttle I hear some light rattling in the engine as the RPM’s drop to idle. As I said I’m entirely new to this… Is the rattling normal or did I screw it up? I wonder if I should keep using it and hope somehow I got lucky, or should I have the engine torn down? I can do minor repairs but not an engine rebuild and I can’t see that it would be worth the price of an engine rebuild. Your thoughts are appreciated!!!!

Trx 250x engine rebuild

It’s a 1985ish 250x. What are my options for over sized pistons on this motor?
I see some online but I don’t know atvs well, is the 4 stroke 250 motor pretty much the same for all the hondas?
I’ve only got about 90 psi on kicking it over. I haven’t checked whatever this de compression setup is.

400ex leaking center Gasket (Brand New)

So i just put all new valves, seals, timing chain, and manual tensioner in my 400ex. Brand new gaskets and the one at the top of the piston that the head (that holds the valves) sits on is leaking pretty bad. I torqued the 4 nuts to 33 ft lbs. is this because it used to leak all the time and now the surfaces arnt smooth? I dont want to get either surface machined out.. Ive stuck enough money into this. Can I just put a thin layer of RTV Black above and below that 3 plate gasket? or Should I just get rid of that gasket all together and replace it with the RTV? It leaks pretty bad.. Oil all over the front and every time i hit the throttle it whistles and blows air on my left leg…

Thanks!

Front brakes

Hi, I have a 97 fourtrax and I’m working on the breaks. On the front brakes, there is a little gear that pushes the drum out. The problem is, it is seized up and I can’t move it. I tried spraying it, but it wasn’t working to well. Any other ideas?

High pitch squeal

I have a 1990 Honda TRX 300 2×4. I recently changed the rear brake shoe and now I am getting a high pitch squeal as soon as I accelerate. Thought it might just be the brakes seating themselves in old drums, but it seems to be coming from front end. Also get it if going slow downhill? Any ideas? Also just did an oil change recently
