Early to Late Rancher 420 transmission changes

Does anyone know what changes Honda made in the 2009 or so Rancher 420 vs the 07-08 ? Looks to me that they maybe packaged the gears that actually meshed together as a set on the 07-08??? Take for instance the gear listed #14 is priced at $167 , but the #9 gear (one it meshes with) is the same part number and is also listed at $167 …..The 09 lists the same gear #14 with a different part number and is priced at $57 ??? I know that we are looking at parts drawings and not pics , but it would not surprise me if these part are the same , just packaged different . I ran into this with cranks for my 07 , with the later model crankshafts being $100 bucks cheaper . I bought one of the later model cranks and it was IDENTICAL to the earlier model so now I’m investigating these tranny gears to se if they are along the same line . Here is a pic of the old and new crank for your viewing pleasure !

Purpose for Change Clutch

I have a 2000 TRX350FE. I can see by looking in the service manual that it has two clutches. One is a centrifugal clutch, and the other is a change clutch. I can understand the purpose for the centrifugal clutch, as it automatically disengages drive power at low RPM during vehicle stop, and then reconnects drive power as you add throttle to get going again. However, the purpose of the change clutch is not clear to me. When I look at how that clutch is constructed, I see that it is very similar to other Honda clutches that are engaged/disengaged through the use of a clutch lever. In the case of my TRX350FE, there is no clutch lever, so I would like to better understand how the change clutch comes into play and how it is engaged/disengaged. Presumably its function is somehow tied to changing gears, thus the reason for naming it the change clutch.

Any insight that you can provide as to the functionality of the change clutch is appreciated.

ATV Lift

I would like to hear from others regarding the usefulness of an ATV lift. I wouldn’t mind buying one, but I am not sure I would use it all that much. It seems that Honda ATV’s are pretty reliable and don’t require a lot of maintenance, but it would be very nice to have an ATV lift on hand if and when the need for it arises. I imagine that one would find other uses for it as well. What are your opinions on this?

made an oil mistake, need advice

Well I bought a brand new 14′ recon 250es for my son. I figured we would do an oil change as he has been riding it since May.

I read through the manual, the oil section, and put regular yellow bottle penzoil 10w30 in the engine. Wasn’t trying to be cheap, I just have a few gallons of it around and thought it was the right stuff.

He rode it for a couple days hasn’t had any issues. He generally doesn’t leave second gear and just drives it around the house.

I was reading the manual today and noticed that I am idiot and didn’t read the whole section about oil TYPES not just the weight. I have since read all of the horror stories on forums about slippage, friction modifiers, engine damage etc.
I am very pissed that I was so stupid.

This is the first quad I have ever worked on and I have never had a motorcycle, it was just a stupid mistake. I am draining the oil tomorrow and replacing with the correct Honda oil.

My concern is that unknown damage has already been done and not all of the wrong oil is going to drain (.4 qt left behind) Am I being too paranoid?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Destroyed centrifugal clutch

Boy these old Recons are some tough old birds. We bought this ’99 a couple summers ago and my kid has been relentless on it. Last time we were out it seized up and after the tear down I noticed a few things.

First, the oil chain popped off the pump sprocket and you can imagine what happened after that. I also noticed metal pieces on the bottom of the crankcase. After some looking, I’ve determined some of the fragments are the little circlips that are supposed to be on the clutch.

And the oil filter. I guess that hunk of crud is metal particles that got caught on it. So I’m doing a full tear down and splitting the cases to get to that oil filter screen too. I can only imagine what’s caught up in it.

Not a single complaint out of this thing the whole time. Started every time, ran every time. So I’m gearing up now with a new oil pump chain, timing chain, clutch parts, etc.
