’92 fourtrax TRX 300 Ignition Issues

Hi everyone, first time poster.
I have started collecting older atv’s and fixing them up. My current project is a ’92 fourtrax trx 300. at this stage it runs and drives well but stalls out without warning, sometimes when idling, sometimes mid-ride. it then starts right up again and goes. no amount of throttle when it begins to stall brings it back to life. where should i start my trouble-shooting?
another question which may or may not be related, the spark plug for this quad has threaded terminal. it does not snap on like the traditional rounded terminals such as on a car or truck. my spark plug wire/boot just kinda sits on there. does this mean the terminal connector inside the wire/boot is damaged? shouldn’t it snap on?
looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say.
thanks

in a bind

i just got a 88 honda fourtrax 300 2×4. The original owner was an old man and lost the key so told his grand son to try and get it to start. The kid cut the harness all up trying to hot wire it. I need to know what wires connect to what to get the start controls to work and if there are any safety switchs to check. He only hacked up the wires were the main harness and start/stop/light control swithes meet. Ive tried finding a diagram but it calls for colors i do not have like a blue/white wire etc. Sorry for the crap english and bad typing

1986 trx350 bad stator

I’m curious on how hard it is to replace the stator. I’ve pictures of the stator cover as well as the stator it’s self and it looks like it’s as easy as taking off the bolts around the cover and unbolting the stator. Am I correct or is it a little more to it then that.

Swingarm issues.

This machine is getting irritating… This is the third time my swing arm has come loose this summer. It had a bad bearing so that was replaced first. It came loose about a week later on a ride. Drove to the repair shop and the guy tightened it on the spot. He was real apologetic about it, I figured it wasn’t properly tightened/ adjusted.. Now about a month later and four rides, it’s practically falling apart it so loose. Not happy about it because of the safety issue and I can’t say this guy is very reliable with fixing. I’ll be taking it back to him tomorrow but, damn. I really didn’t think this was a hard thing to fix right.

Side note, my hub is still tight.. So far. (Another issue I’ve posted about)

Is my 400ex running lean?

I posted this same one in the TRX forum but i figured i should leave it here instead. I am new to all of this and can’t wait to get involved!

I have bought a 2001 400ex and am wondering if it is running lean. I have a white bro e series exhaust. i have tried larger main jets which seem to help the high end of the band of course, but I have also not been able to perfect killing the engine while throttle is pressed and pull the plug.

the fuel mixture screw is 2.5 turns out

When I pull the plug after it is warmed up and I let it idle for a while it is white. When i let it idle with half choke, the plug is tan.

THE PREDICAMENT: I can turn the fuel mixture screw all the way in and the engine does not die.

I am new to tuning the carburetor and was thinking of maybe trying a 40 or 42 pilot jet. But without the engine dying when the fuel screw is turned in all the way, I am at a stand still.

Any help or suggestions, tips or tricks would be appreciated thank you!
