I have a honda 400ex that always ticked some, and faster when you revved it up. But this weekend was riding it pretty hard and it started ticking real loud. Then I rode it some more and shut it off, when i went to start it again, starter wouldnt turn it over. Figured maybe timing chain was jammed? so put it in 4th and rolled it forward to loosen chain ( think this is what i was doing) and i got the starter to kick in, but now even in gear if i start it, you can hear something inside just spinning? believe its the chain came off top gear right? how do i fix this? can i do it without pulling motor? and would it have messed anything up? wheres the tensioner on these motors? what all will need replace? thanks!

Not sure how many ATC guys are here, but I know there are some oldtimers on here.

Buddy just had a 185S given to him (free dollars). It had been sitting in a shop for several years. He just wanted it to putt around the yard on.

Before I got it he put a new ebay carb on it (the dummy threw away the OEM carb), cleaned the tank, and put a new rope on the pull start.

It will not start and run but not idle. He has no air cleaner on it and I don’t think there is an air cleaner housing. He bought one of these, but from the schematics it looks like there should be an air box on it, which apparently is missing.

It smokes like a freight train too, but for now he’s happy with adding oil.

Sooo, does anyone have pics of how the airbox mounts? There are a few for sale on ebay but they look somewhat different from one another.

Figured I’d get the thing filtered first, see if I can figure out the idle issue once I get an air cleaner on there.

The brakes are non existent too. Look to be drums similar to my TRX’s, so will take the down, clean and lube.

Anybody know of another model that has brake cables that will work? Looks like they are available, but they’re like $30 EACH, while the brake cables for my 500 and 420 are running about $6-7

blew out a cv axle and went to replace both. the right hand side came out easy enough but the left hand side seems stuck. I messed around with it for an hour and finally gave up I didn’t want to damage anything further. any ideas on how to remove??

If I turn the fuel dial to reserve then back to on I can get it to start and run for about 5 to 10 seconds. Looking for direction on how to approach locating the problem, any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, I need help. I have a 2012 rancher 420 with ps. A couple months back I rolled the atv and ps stop working. Took it to dealer and they reset the code on ecm and gave it back. Next time I rode it the ps light came back on and ps stopped working. Took it back to dealer and they reset it again and said they saw nothing wrong and couldn’t get it not to work so I picked it up. Same thing happened again on the next ride. Took it in for the 3rd time and put a new battery and cleared the code. I picked it up and took it home. When I took it off the trailer it stopped working again. I don’t know what to do. They said it’s throwing a low voltage code? And help?

I have an 85 TRX 250. It has been sitting for years so I just rebuilt the carb and cleaned out the fuel tank, new air filter, etc. It is sluggish to respond when I give it hard throttle and it doesn’t have enough power to climb a relatively steep hill in low gear. I can have the throttle maxed out and it will just slow to a stop. It runs well on flat ground but cannot maintain speed in high gear. Seems like it just isn’t getting enough fuel. I have the main carb jet backed out 2 3/8 turns from closed as recommnded. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Ok so guys I’ve posted a few threads lately but I especially need your input on this. My 2013 rancher 420 is the at model (dual clutch tranny) and when I am going about 40 and press on the brakes hard it makes a noise in the tranny like it is trying to catch up in the gearing. It does this in both manual and auto. My dad’s teryx will make a similar noise when letting off the gas so I was just wondering if this was normal or something wrong with the dual clutch or my tranny? Thanks guys.
