Not starting unless choked and primed

I have a 1989 Polaris Trail Boss 250. I rebuild the carburetor twice. I even bought a used one on ebay and tried it and same issue. When I choke it and spray starting fluid in i t will run and race really high. When I turn off the choke it will die almost instantly. It has 125 psi compression, new spark plug, fresh gas pre mixed with oil.

I took off the head and it does not appear to have a gasket between the top head and cylinder. When I crank her over and put my hand over the carb it does not appear to be sucking in any air. Shouldn’t it be sucking air to draw the fuel into the cylinder?

lost all hope

I am the owner of 2 trail boss 250’s from the 85-87 era. The older one of the pair ran when I parked it due to the transmission failing. Bought the parts machine a year ago it never ran but suffered the same failure. Now I have a nice original trailboss I can’t rideand a ton of parts. I am admitting defeat and would like help either placing a value on the pair or finding someone who will trade me a running workhorse for my pile of potential

Need help with rebuild

I’m doing a top end on my trail boss, 350 4×4, 93 I have checked the crank shaft play, and it’s good. My question is, should I go ahead and and rebuild the bottom end? Getting the new barrings is no problem, but how much work is it to rebuild? Or should I just put new seals in? I need some advice with this, thanks, Jim

03 no crank/start issue

I am having a strange issue with my 03 trail boss. When you turn the key to "on" there are no R or N lights in the cluster and it won’t crank when you turn the key. At first I thought it was the battery so replaced that and it ran fine on a 20 mile trip. Next time I go to use it(about 3 weeks) same problem. Checked the battery and gave it a charge and it fired right up. Turned it off and let it sit all day and tried it again and same thing. The headlights work but not the starting system. Moving the shifter doesn’t do anything. Applying the brake same thing.

I am thinking either the key switch or reverse/neutral switch. I do have the factory manual on my computer. Any ideas? thanks

96 Trail Boss 250 fan always on

Any help would be appreciated. The fan on my sons trail boss comes on as soon as the key is turned on and never goes off until the key is turned off. If I play with the thermal switch it will turn on and off. I assume it is the switch that is bad. I have searched on here and the internet in general to find a replacement switch. I have even looked at all the parts diagrams for the machine, and I cannot find it.

It is located near the carburetor and has two wires going to it. It is a small round switch.

Does anyone know what the part number is or where to find out?

Thank you.

91 Trail Boss 350 4×4 with plow?

I live in Northern Ontario Canada. It gets damn cold up here.

I have a friend who will make me a plow cheaper than I can buy in stores. (Good to know a professional welder.) Where is the strongest point on the front of the frame?

I probably will park it outside, with a cover over the majority of the bike. Any issues with starting it in the really cold times?
I plan on also getting chains for all wheels.

Any other suggestions for using the bike for plowing my driveway?

91 350l issues

hello, i rebuilt top end of a 91 350l. bored .20 over, wisco piston rings, gasket set. started it up let it run for about 2 mins.rev’d it about 1/4 way and it backfired inside motor and blew the crank seal (on clutch side, didnt have the clutch on it yet) out about 10 feet away. i know i put piston in right way with arrow on piston facing exhaust side. what could have caused this? im at a lose on this and getting highly aggitated with it….
