I found this condition when I removed the instrument housing to get at the high beam adjuster nob.

2007 Sportsman 500 x2 EFI totally dead
We use the machine around the property for hauling, etc. February of 2014 we went out on the roads in one of those blizzards and did some joy riding. No issues at all. Spring came and it was time to use it for utility again. Started having an issue where it would randomly just shut off and then have a hard time coming back on. Fiddled with some wires near the headlight and found what we thought was something loose but couldn’t trace it. This kept going on where it would quit and then have a tough time going but we were able to limp through until Fall. Then in the late fall, it just died. Won’t come on at all. It’s a good battery, and the battery is on a trickle charge at all times. But now it’s just totally dead. Didn’t bother messing with it over the winter but now it’s spring and I need the machine up and running.
I unfortunately can’t find my factory service manual that I bought not long after getting the machine so I’m running blind. I’ve been reading about the PDM unit (finned silver block up near the radiator) going bad on these and wondering how you can test that? What other tests can I do coming off the battery to see if things are ok? Would a bad PDM be intermittent at first and then just die?
thanks in advance!
