2002 Sportsman 500 HO

Racking my brain, which most will say takes a very small rack. I regulate a rather large irrigation ditch at an altiude of approx. 5000 ft. ele. and haul my workhorse to 8000 ft.,and ride from there to 9000 ft. to regulate 6 irrigation reservoir in the Big Horn mountains. Unloaded and headed across flat terrain noticing the old thang sounded loud, like an exhaust leak. As I started up the trail and asked for rpm’s, the respone was slow, and the more I asked from it the less it wanted to produce. Sputtering and back firing, I managed to get it back to a point where I could load it. Ok, enough said there. Back home, I found that fuel and air blew back out of the carb intake. My local guy, and if you get to Sheridan, WY look up Joe Hando, thought it might be the carb to motor connecting piece, NOPE, a new one and same results. Re-set the valve lash and that improved it enough that I thought I had it.NOPE, next morn, same thing. I take off the air box cover when at altitude, as this machine came from KS., and it has run fine for 5 yrs., thinking not that, gonna jet it though any way. Timing is dead on. Woodruf keys are intake. Just on the odd chance the muffler was plugging up, took it of and noticed low throttle to mid is good, sputters to high throttle, then screams like a banshi. I have no problem taking it to Joe, but I am one of those that figures the more I know the better off I am at the top of the mountain alone. Thanks in advance. JB:Thinkingof_:

Sportsman,Scrambler, RZR?

Hey everyone. Its been a while since I have been on here and am in search of a new toy. I ended up selling my sportsman 500 about a year ago so i could move to Alberta. Now that me and the family are settled down I am on the hunt again for a new toy…… this time tho something that the girlfriend and I can go in comfortably. And when my son gets a little older I can take him out on as well.

I started my hunt looking at brand new RZR’s, but i can not justify spending as much on a toy as I did my truck. So I turned back to the quads. but now am wondering what I should even look at. I want something with some jam so the 570 is out of the question. I have never ridden a 850 or a 1000 before and I dont want to get a quad that will be throwing me around all day.

So what are you guys thinking, seeing as how my son is just learning to walk, should i just save the money and get a quad and up grade to a used RZR in a few years or should I invest in one now this way when the girlfriend and I go out she is not getting thrown around on the back of the quad all day?

Any and all advice is greatly appretiated.

Cheers
Chris

Carb questions

I got a few questions about my 2013 sportsman 500 if someone can help me out. I’ve been doing some maintenance and also work to it to kinda water proof it. First . I extended my carb vent into the light pod and also put a screw in the drain hose. On the right side of the carb where it has the tube I’m good on but I noticed on the left side of the carb pretty much same spot as other side there is a port or hole there with nothing on it. Was wondering what it is and if it needs a vent tube on it??? It may be nothing but I’m just trying to keep water out. I’ve never seen anyone mention it but just curious.

Also this may be a dumb question but on the left side of motor kind of in front of the belt pipe joint . What is that round cylinder going into motor with little wires coming out. What is it and it’s purpose and anything need to be done to it for riding around water ??

I’ve extended the carb vent and also the vent on the crank case. Also put a screw in my carb drain hose. Any others I need to extend? The one from the rear is already run up but where is run to? Im not seeing it in the pod? What about fuel vent ?

I’ve changed oil and have tightend hose clamps. I’ve greased all fittings and have all my belt stuff sealed up and air box stuff and dielectric greased the electrical. Also making sure things are right and tight.Anything else I should look into? What about the pressure release slit on the hose? Will it pull in water? Could tape be put around it while around water then take it off or does it need to be just left alone?
Im not ready to snorkel yet . Will one day but need to do all this anyway.
Thanks

2″ hitch for older straight axle Sportsman

Anyone know a good after market hitch to use with an older sportsman with the straight axle? Seems all I can find are factory replacements or 2" receiver hitch for newer machines with independent rear suspension. I’m considering building something but figured why re-invent the wheel.
Please let me know what you’ve seen out there. Web links would be much appreciated!
Thanks
