Have read a bit and am thouroughly confused. I’m looking to get a bit more clutch grab for riding new england trails, but really don’t want to pony up for a complete clutch kit. Read that springs can help? Put some stock size mud tires on and feel like I lost a bit, and since most of riding is low to moderate speeds, I would like the clutch to pick up sooner and harder. Also, do mufflers and air filters help the 500’s at all? Thanks!
New to the forum, but not new to quads. Recently purchased a 2004 Sportsman 700 that has less than 700 miles on it. It’s my first Polaris machine and first 4-wheel drive. It’s in great shape as far as I can tell and does have a professionally installed 2 inch lift that was put on recently with a new set of Gator tires. Machine definitely has not been abused.
Question is that whether in 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive from a dead stop the machine is very jumpy. A little worse on hard surface than on dirt, but about the same. Feels like somebody is hitting you in the back with a ball bat it is so jumpy…catches than doesn’t. It honestly feels like something in the drive is slipping or jumping and it feels like it comes more from the front than the rear, even though the AWD is switched off. Also, it seems to require what I would consider excessive RPM to even get it to move, but maybe that is part of this system I am unaccustomed to. Once underway it appears to be fine, although I have not had it in the mud/extreme conditions yet.
Any ideas what this is or what may need replaced/adjusted? I’ve had it up on lift and all of the driveshafts appear fine.
I am fixing to mount a LED Light Bar. I was wondering if anyone has used the pre wired winch power source located under the front right fender. I have my winch powered there but figured the junction box could be used. Thanks

So I lurked on this forum for quite a while beige I joined up after I bought my 850 this past weekend. I don’t understand where some people are getting their fuel mileage claims for the 850. I put on 155 miles with another 850, a 570, 500 and a 450. The biggest gas hog was the 450. I did all those miles on 6.4 gallons of 91 octane. We ride in the mountains with a lot of elevation change, but we are on very nice trails cruising between 30 and 40. The other guys on the 850, the 570 and the 500 got about the same mileage. Do bigger tires really dog the machines down or something? Obviously the harder riding will result in worse mileage. Just curious what the deal is.

I have a 2010 550 sportsman EFI and electric steering. It was riding great, stopped put it in Neutral, idled fine. put it in gear and it started to load up and backfire, got it back in Neutral and it cleared up. put it in gear and it backfired and bucked.
so it runs great in park and runs like dirt in gear. even if it is in gear and Idling it runs like dirt.
This problem only happens when it has warmed up. When it is cold runs great in gear and quick test drive.
It is at the dealers for about one month, nothing on their computer. They have changed out the crank sensor, tested the fuel pump, checked the fuel injector system, tried another ignition module and check the wire harness.
SHIIIIIIIP WHAT THE HELL.
So I am thinking could it be the gear switch on the tranny? Does this switch tell the computer to do something to the timing or injectors? Why am I saying this because in the beginning it ran fine in park or Neutral, Put it in gear, no load no throttle and it went right into running like crap, got it back in park and it cleared up.
I am kinda desperate for help.
thank all.
