Its an 08 Sportsman 500 HO that ‘sometimes’ cranks a while before it fires up. Then ‘sometimes’ it will shut off when you drive off. But will restart and may do it again. But most always runs good. Then the thing it also ‘sometimes’ does is after you ride it and immediately want to restart it, it will not crank over till you shut the key off and wait about 2 minutes. And also ‘sometimes’ when you crank it over and it don’t start but you keep on cranking, it will quit cranking. If you leave the key on it will never crank again, but if you turn the key off and wait a short while, you can hear a click like a circuit breaker resetting in the front. Then it will crank over again. When it don’t crank or start the dash lights come on like normal. No codes set. Is there a circuit breaker in there somewhere? I know it’s some kind of electrical issue, so wondered if anyone has any direction to head me in? Thanks for your help in advance!
06 Sportsman 800. Took it into two shops for major tune ups, and other work…spent about 1800 total for everything…but the one item that I could not get them to actually see/hear or even acknowledge, is the sound of what sounds like metal scraping…Kind of like a "sshhhhkkk" sound when in motion. Also a clacking sound when feathering the throttle. Almost like the smacking of a bad u joint when lightly going from load on the drive train to no load.
The other day I heard a light whining sound starting up when in motion that would increase or decrease with speed. It suddenly made a klunk sound then no motion moving forward. Just rev and no go. I put it in low…and a slight klunk and it moved normally. Put it back in High and it moved forward normally again…but the whine is still there.
I was thinking that maybe I have a motor or tranny mount or something like that is broken causing the drive line to separate under load.
Any other thoughts? I bought this thing cheap about 5yrs ago with a lot of hours and miles on it. Used to be a surveyor’s and he did ride it hard for work on fire roads in the mountains. But now it is a ranch ATV and used for plowing and just general ranch work.
Ever since the klunk and no go it has been sitting. But will need it for this winter.
I checked with another forum and someone said it was the roller cage in the front diff. But this happens in 2×4 as well as 4×4.
Long story short … I’m installing a winch on a 4 wheeler and need to find a bolt just like this one except it needs to be 1/4" longer.
Sorry the pics a little out of focus due to distance. It’s a 5/16-18 3/4" bolt with a hex head that says E-G 10.9. I searched ebay using the best criteria I could and didn’t see anything similar after searching through literally the first 1000 hits.
I believe the 10.9 expresses a high strength that I’m really not that concerned about. The replacement doesn’t need to be as strong.
Anybody have a suggestion on where I can find something like this? If all else fails I can try to do the connection differently but for now I’m just looking for as close a replacement as possible.

I had a hall sensor go about 4 months ago the speedo was bouncing and flickering was not indicating the proper speed. replaced the sensor and I was good to go. Now I have no speed indicator everything else works gear position, slow indicator for reverse, hours, etc. but no speed is this the damn hall sensor again this is my guess anyway?
I went out to start it this weekend, I turned the key on and cranked it, it can be finicky sometimes when it hasn’t been started in a while. So it didn’t crank up but it tried to, but sputtered out. So, I went to crank it again and noticed my display showed nothing. So I turned the key off and back on again and still had nothing, the machine is completely dead, battery is fully charged, I pulled the front cover, no fuses blew. It’s almost like something got too much voltage and a breaker blew. I looked in the service manual but it appears the only circuit breaker our machines have is for protection for the fan switch. I’m stumped, am I missing something? Is there another circuit that is protected by a breaker or fuse? Does the ignition circuit have something to keep it from being overloaded? That is the only explanation, because it went from cranking and starting to nothing so something popped just not sure what.
Hey guys I bought this Sportsman from a salvage yard. The speedo worked for a while. Now it has completely quit. Is there a way that I can by pass this thing and make everything else work with out it? I don’t need the a speedo. Does this atv have a tcm? I’m having some ongoing electrical gremlins and would like to take these two potential problems out of the way.
Sitting in idle for a minute, when to back up, steering suddenly turns right. Rumbling noise. Moved forward a few feet, steering was fine, backed up again, same thing. Went forward, got halfway to the house (I’m just in the yard) and it began to rumble and pull to the right again. A few more back and forths and it was ok to steer again. Is this a wheel bearing jamming or something else?
