Hello, I’m working on my cheap (problematic) 1998 Sportsman that I picked up a few months ago. I pulled the starter out to rebuild it and it won’t spin unless it is grounded to the frame, even with the positive and negative leads hooked up. Is this normal or have I put something back together incorrectly?
Even with this weird grounding it was working for a while but now it seems to be seized, I pulled the recoil cover off and I can’t turn the shaft at all. Going to go pull it out again and see why its binding.
Also, these things are a pain to work on, you have to disassemble half the machine to get at anything. Are other brands the same or are they more service friendly?
I have no start, no power to anything.Started having issues after using winch, bat light came on winching and bike died.Jumped started bike and seems like issues started then.First, no lower lights, got fixed, next no speedo, then no winch, then no start in neutral or park.Had to pull hand break to start, then no power to anything.Replaced batt, solenoid, all connections cleaned and re- greased.Power at main red wire on sbc1 plug, no power to ign switch, or kill switch, all switches in run position.Read on here about ign safety shut down.Any suggestions at all, please help.

I can’t get into the diagnostic mode on my 2006 Sportsman 450. I think it’s because it’s not showing what gear I’m in. Where is the switch that controls this. Can it be cleaned or does it need replacing.?
Got a small problem. I had a tore boot…no problem….just order new one and replace. Pull the shaft and clean up the CV. Install new boot. Tried to use old "Polaris boot bans, but they are just barely long enough to fit around the new boot. When I would try and tighten up to the "normal" locking spot….the boot would roll up and pull off the CV joint. Way to tight. Now as ya’ll know…the bans/straps that "Polaris" uses is those that you can squeeze together and lock in. So I used the strap/ban that came with the new boot.
The new boot came with the type that has to be "rolled up" and folded over. Tap the ears down and cut off remaining strap. No probem with doing that. ONLY that now when I go to install in the strut housing…..the ban/strap is hitting on the housing. I have went back and tried to tap the "nuckle" down….but that did not help my struggles. It still hits. ( Starts rubbing bout 6 o’clock > 10 o’clock ) This boot looks to be a bit thicker than the boot that was on it. Which I dont mind that…but the thicker-ness of the boot now has cause me rubbing problem. Also..by cuting the ban…I now have a strap that if I break it loose….I will not be able to tighten back up because there is not enough there to grab on to and tighten up. ( I have not broke loose yet….so the last statement may be untrue…just speck-u-lateing ).
Anyone have this happen to them…..and how did ya fix it? Did you have to go back with "factory" boots? Or did ya get another strap and tighten down MORE and hope that it doesn’t hit?
Can’t seem to find a thread on how to remove the a-arms on my 04-700 twin. I was trying to get them out so I can get to the prop shafts in the front and rear.
I know that I can remove the shafts without pulling these, but it sure makes easier to get them out of the way.
After removing the bolt from one side…..the other side just spins. Any advise would be greatly appiceated.
I did find where someone adds extra zert fitting to them. Will most-likely do this too.
Hello Forum. I recently purchased a 2005 Sportsman 700. Although, at 70 years old, this is my first ATV, I have owned or worked on everything from model airplane engines to army tanks. Anyway, my Sportsman is in very nice condition and I have ordered a Service Manual, cleaned the filter, greased the fittings, and changed all the fluids except the engine coolant (I’ll get to that soon). However, I now notice that the "Check Engine" light is on when running. I don’t think it was on when I bought it, but can’t be sure. Diagnostic Mode indicates failure codes 41 & 45. Has anyone had any experience fixing these?
TIA, Rod
