So I’m new to this whole forum thing, and hope I’m posting this in the right place… Anyway, I bought a 2006 sportsman 500 HO of a friend of mine this past spring and I’ve loved it so far. So I’ve started to put some time and money into it. I installed an EPI clutch kit, K&N filter and a DG pipe on it. Was planing on doing a jet kit on it this coming weekend, but I think this misfiring issue is bumping that to the back of the line. The issue started a couple weeks ago when I was on the trail and hit a puddle going pretty fast, and it immediately started misfiring, but cleared up rather quickly so I continued on my ride. Any time I came to a puddle or water crossing it would again misfire. I brought it home and went through some of the more easily accessible connections with some dielectric grease, started it up, and it seemed to run fine around my house. Took it out again this past weekend and it ran fine for a few minutes, but then anytime I gave it a lot of throttle it would misfire. I tried to go easy on it but it continued to get worse until it would barely go up even small inclines. Took it home and the next day it seemed to be running fine. My long-winded point is, 1: it seems to happen wet 2: it seems to get worse hot.
I’m just hoping someone has a good starting place for me, since the idea of chasing a loose ground wire or a tiny split in a wire jacket isn’t necessarily my forte.
Thanks for any help
Hello all and thank you for all the useful information I sponged while lurking.
I am looking to get my first ATV, it’s needed since we moved out to the sticks and got more land. The ATV I would like will be a work horse here in Wisconsin, plowing, hauling and whatever else I need it for. It will be rare to take it on the trails. I have what I think is a good deal on a 2001 500 Sportsman with 1800 miles, push button 4 wheel drive, automatic. No winch or plow, but it’s in really nice shape for $2995 with very little wear showing. Could this be the good deal I think it is? Will it do the work I need it too?
I also have my eye on a 700 and an 800 that come with all the bells and whistles (no plows again but they do have 2500 winches). These machines have identical options and mileage is 1025 and 1182. With both ATV’s being virtually the same including both are 2006 besides the size difference why would they both be priced at $4995? I didn’t want to spend that much on my first machine but I may have to jump in.
Any suggestions and comments would help.
Thanks again, I will wait for your wisdom.
As you know my questions, they are always wordy and not really right to the point. lol I just want to make sure you get as much info as possible so everyone knows what I’m talking about.
So, I have a sportsman 450 2006. Amazing machine. I’ve been running it around in the back woods, pulling trees with it, and I cant find anything that it cant do! I love it. Its an amazing machine. I cant get it stuck, and I cant find anything that I cant pull with it. The issue with it, is the Winch.
The winch works fine, but it is old and has some problems. It goes ‘Out’ just fine, if there is someone putting tension on the wire while I press the ‘Out’ button, but it doesnt come ‘In’ very easily. It actually makes a ‘Click’ noise when it doesnt work. Almost as if you were trying to start your car and your battery was dead. Just one click. If you keep pressing the In button over and over, it’ll work eventually. It seems to work every time if there is pressure on the winch. Like the plow I have. If the plow is hooked up, and i try to raise the plow by making the winch go In, it works 90% of the time. If there is no weight on the winch, it is a 50/50 chance of it working.
It is almost 100% guaranteed to be the solenoid. Some people call it the ‘Contactor’ I guess? but thats what I found out this problem to be…Can anyone confirm or deny that idea?
ON TOP OF THAT (sorry for the long posts… :newbie: ) I’m looking to get just a whole new winch all together. Its old, the cable is rusty and fraying a little bit so my question about that is, there are a bunch of different types of Winches. Do I have to be careful which one I buy? Will some of them not fit my ATV? Also whats a good pound for the winch to buy? my current one is a 2500#. Any information on that would help out a lot…Thanks a lot guys! Sorry for the long read!
Decision time . . . . Wife rides a 2012 550 LE that she really likes, mostly because it’s Blue Fire and she’s not finding a replacement. It has nearly 275 hours / 5000 trail miles on it, has had regular oil, lube, grease soap & water but is looking like it’s time for ball joints, bushings and wheel bearings. How much life should we expect out of a single cylinder?
Im new to the atv world and im not the smallest guy in the world 6’3 300 plus lbs. was wondering if the 570 has enough power or should i just get the 850. Mainly just be doing some trail riding. Any advise would be greatly appreciated

I bought an 03 700 sportsman last week to take hunting. The battery indicator flashed and the battery was dead when I bought it. I purchased a new battery but the same thing happened. The diagnostic says the battery never charges at all. The same reading is there with or without the throttle. Also, the speedo and tach don’t advance. The cluster will light. The awd never comes on, no matter the switch but the front wheels always pull. The PO said the only thing he did to the bike is put a cylinoid from autozone on it. Let’s start with the battery:
1. No current. Alternator or resister rectifier or what?
Next 2. Speedo/tachometer- hall sensor or speed sensor or what?
3. Awd- is the cage broken and the switch? Why is the light never coming on?
4. Rough idle.
I’m wondering if there is something that would affect all these things at once like a volt regulator. HELP
I’ll be driving around and it will get boggy, if I stop and come to an idle it will either low idle around 800 rpm or it will simply stall out. If it stalls out, I will start it and it will run fine immediately after. If it doesn’t stall out the low idle will eventually clear itself within a few seconds. I can drive around fine for a bit then it will do it again. I have a flat 2 acre yard so I’m not working it hard. No warning lights showing on the display.
Things I’ve checked or done:
I have a fuel psi gage attached and when it sputters or stalls the psi remains around 38 psi
I checked the tps and it is at .710 dcv at idle
Pulled the plugs and they are golden brown
Fresh gas
