i just got a real nice 2002 polaris 400 scramble 4×4 —2 stroke
now i went all threw the quad looking for stuff to fix or replace because we all know when buying a used atv its a big gamble
not a thing broke or wore out the guy used it on his farm he said not many hours on it at all
so anyways i got all the greasing done but how do you get the front cover off to get at the grease fitting for the steering steam
on friday i bought a scrambler from my uncle he said it needs a timing chain and might need some kind of rings for the top end last night i went to start it up and it started right up with a jumper connected but when i went to put it in gear it made a vibrating noise swo i put it back in neutral
so my problems are
– will idle but won’t start but needs a jump start to be connected for it to start
– might need timing chain
– won’t get into gear
so my questions are can in get away with out those rings in the topend and how do i get it into gear and to start up

My crank seized up and I’m pretty sure I need to replace the crank bearings but I’m having trouble removing the clutch assembly. I have a homemade clutch puller which I got the idea from this forum but the assembly will not budge loose its like its stuck on something. I’ve watched videos and read some threads but no one has mentioned this problem and I really need some help.
So recently I moved to Morinville Ab from Ameliasburgh On. In the process of getting ready for the move I sold all my toys. This brings me to now. I recently picked up a 1999 Scrambler 500 for $1000. It ran poorly and needed some work.
It needed the wiring gone through due to the poor wiring hacks that the OP had done (no electric start, key not working, no headlights, no 4×4) The plastic is also in poor shape (Frankenstein stitches on the rear fender etc.
So what I have done so far is – serviced front hubs, complete fluid change, fix the wiring.
Next is mint shape blue plastics, new stock size tires (purchased itp mud lites for the front already) backs are next week. Looking for aomething more agressive like ITP589’s.
Some things on my to do list 1. (because at some point the hood has been replace with one from a 400) to get a 2 stroke oil container and to plumb it into the fuel system with a shut off for additional fuel. A reserve/reserve if you will.
2. EPI clutch kit – 25" rear tires and 26" front
3. Xplorer Tranny to get low range
Also to change all the lighting to LED
Here are the pics as I picked it up…
More pictures to follow as some cosmetics get taken care of…
Please feel free to give me any advice/ personal experiences to do ro not to do with this machine!
Recently I picked up a decent 1999 Scrambler 500 4×4. Bit by bit I have been going through it, service etc. I have replaced both the front tires to some 23x8x10 swamplites ($149 taxes incl) and will be replacing the rears soon. Then I happened across a new in box EPI WE435003 clutch kit for $80 including the clutch tool.
Now onto my question… Who on here is using this kit and what do you all think of this kit? If I grab this kit then another tire upgrade will be in order – something like 26" fron and 25" rear swamplites as my brother inlaw gets them through his work very cheap!
First off I have a slight pull in the steering to the right. Is this a simple alignment issue or something along the lines of tie rods and bearings.
Second, I have a loud whine from which I presume is the CVT. Its loudest at half throttle and is completely gone with no throttle (machine can coast and no noise). Looking for a quick diagnosis before I rip the quad apart or go to a shop. Thanks
