Drive Line Question

So, after doing some initial research I decided to go from 14/38 set-up on my 06 TLD to a 13 tooth front since the chain is shot and I need to swap it out. I go the TM aftermarket swing-arm slider that is "designed for hot-setup 13th". I have noticed a few places that mention some other issues not to run 13 up front. Something about shaft damage. Don’t see how lowering the leverage arm on the torque being applied to chain could cause an increase in shaft bearing stress. Am I missing something? Is there a concern with going 13/38?

Help with oil contamination identification

Need some assistance with someone who has had a Predator torn apart to rebuild. I purchased my new to me 2006 TLD model few weeks ago. Went for one ride in the mountains and have started to do some upgrades and full maintenance baseline on oil, coolant, brake fluid, battery.

I noticed when I drained the oil yesterday that there were some small chunks of something in the oil drain pan filter. I was about to have heart attack because it looked like aluminum and upon close inspection it turned out to be what looks like a grey O-ring that has been cut up into pieces.

Where would this O-ring be, I see it in the pictures of the Predator engine seal kits, but I don’t have a repair manual so can’t determine where it is from.

Next, is it going to hurt to run the motor with that seal missing inside, or could it have been off of a removable cap that happened to fall in engine, like the valve covers?

I think this thing has had hardly any ride time on it. No wear evident anywhere, grips, plastic, skids were all perfect condition. I think this may have been first oil change in the thing looking at all the fine metallic dust build up on drain plug but oil was very clean, it honestly seemed like the break-in oil.

Help me diagnose top end knock?

I just bought a fixer-upper 2004 Predator 500.
It has a top end knock that stops at idle after a few seconds.
Im hoping this is a case of a stretched cam chain, but thought you guys might recognize it.

It does start super easy – the moment you hit the starter in fact.
Seems to run well with good power aside from the knock.

Everybody likes videos. Here you go:

As soon as I get hold of my tools (in a storage unit) I’ll pull the timing chain tensioner and see if it’s maxed out, but until then, I’d love to hear what you guys think.

Thanks!

Slipe-On Exhaust

Is there a slipe-on that runs under $200 new? Or, anyone got one in the garage used that they aren’t using?

These exhaust are just ridiculously priced. I put the full system on my truck including two mufflers and all piping for what a Yoshi slipe on will cost me.

Was just trying to get something with little deeper growl, but don’t care about increased performance, as it won’t likely be noticeable anyway

Predator 500 runs then dies

Hi guys new to the forum I have a question that’s probably been discussed but i could not find it anywhere so here goes.

I have a 2006 Predator 500. Ran fine then all of a sudden it bogged out and died then wouldnt restart. At first it turned over but wouldn’t fire. Fuel was low so I filled it and let it sit. The next day it started perfectly fine but would start then die. The quad is new to me and it looks like it has an aftermarket pipe and intake. Carb also looks new. I’m thinking possibly it may be carb related. It did also start backfiring before it died the first time the issue started. If anyone could help or point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

05 pred 500 engine question

Brand new to the forum. I’ve got a 05 pred 500 completely stock. Does anyone know a place or a website I can buy a new engine or a top end rebuild kit? I’ve searched and can’t find anything. Also any info that anyone’s done to theirs as far as a big bore kit etc and prices what not. Or what motors will swap into this with little to no mods. I’ve never tore into a 4 wheeler but I am an mechanic and have all the tools. Thanks in advance

My son’s Sportsman 300????

Just picked up a Sportsman 300 4×4 for my son and have a few questions. What kind/size tires should I get for him. We trail ride mostly with occasional mud. Well he loves mud. Also do they make A-arm guards for the 300. Do they have a bumper for the front? This our first Polaris and I am not familiar with this brand. Thank you!

Timing Adjustment without brass links.. Question

Hey guys, I’m new to the whole predator scene, made the switch from the raptor 660 and have been very pleased thus far. Recently I noticed coolant in my oil. Starting going to town on it to replace the head gasket. head gasket ended up being fine, but it was the lower base gasket. The timing chain came off the bottom sprocket and I’m trying to figure out how to set the timing. I have the cams in the right position with the intake marks at 9 and 12. And the exhaust cam just 1 tooth advanced. Now i read somewhere about removing the clutch to line something up with a gear? That might not be right but I’m hoping someone can lead me in the right direction because my timing chain does not have any brass links that I can line up at the twelve o’clock spot. Any ideas?
