So today I learned that doing the ball lower joints, would cost $500 or so of I did it myself. Because the whole control arm and bushings have to be done…. The ball joint is welded into the arm.
Does anyone know of an aftermarket product or some other kind of solution to this problem? I’m in Edmonton, Alberta. So with the Canadian dollar’s struggles, I’m quite stuck.
While on the subject, can anyone confirm that it should be the same part for 2000-2003 kodiaks?
Hey guys. I picked up this Kodiak a couple days ago. It’s running great but the guy who had it lost the key and had some guy rig it up to where you touch these two wires together and the fan and dash lights come on then you move the switch to run and press start like normal to crank it. I started trying to redo it and messed it up and don’t know what to do to fix it. I looked at a new ignition switch online but there is only one hArness on it. What is the other harness for and what do I plug it in? In the picture the two red wires are tied into the black wire. You press the black and brown wire together to let it start up. The blue goes to a ground. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this or where the wires are supposed to go? No harness have been cut so I should be able to put it back to normal with the right parts.
I have a 08 big bear 400 irs. Recently I had to change the starter relay. Bike ran fine afterwards. Then I decided to fix the problem of my sticking float flooding the carb whenever I left the gas turned on without the bike running. Removed carb, cleaned and reinstalled. Bike crank and ran for a few seconds before dying and will not start any more.
Spark seems weak- small kernel, but is white spark. Bike will not spit, backfire, sputter, nothing. Starting fluid doesn’t help, same results.
I am not 100% the spark is truly weak, but it seems weak to me. Also replaced spark plug, same results.
I don’t want to just start throwing parts at it, would like to know the proper way to pinpoint where the problem is- test stator, cdi, etc.
Anyone have diagrams or procedures or more experience with these bikes than me?
So I have had my 03 kodiak 450 4×4 for 3 months just finished doing Lota of mild repairs. I have never rode it more then 15 minutes at a time until today. Last week I rebuilt the carb. Set it to spec via the manual. Rebuilt petcock and cleaned the tank out. Quad started right up and ran better then before. No jet kit. Just a rebuild. Uni filter and spark arrestor removed. That’s all as far as engine mods.
So it’s been great running. Went out to ride trails today. First four hours were great. Quad was awesome. Little mud at first but mostly hard pack and rock crawling. Suddenly in the hottest part of day. It started sputtering like it was running out of fuel. It dies so I switch to reserve and it starts right up. 5 minutes later it does it again. So I park it for 30 minutes and go out on the trails again.
Does all right for a little bit. Starts backfiring and sputtering like it lean. Then runs fine. Does this on and off for 1 hour. It’s 102 degrees outside when the quad started messing up. Finally dies like it’s out of fuel and the quad feels very hot. So a big blow to the ego is my wife’s quadrunner 160 pulls me back 3 miles of rough terrain. Get it back to truck and load it up. Just barely.
I’m thinking engine is getting to hot and causing electrical issues or vapor lock. But when we get it home 1.5 hrs later. The wife drives it off the trailer gets 50 yards down the road and it does it agin. Switch to reserve and barely gets it in the garage.
So where do I start? I have a new spark plug on the bench..
I just ought an 03 Kodiak a couple weeks ago and I’m having a couple issues. I noticed it runs fine down a road at high speeds but when you slow down and start climbing over logs and rocks and pretty much anywhere you would use 4×4 it seems to flood almost. The engine had no power and you have be steady on the throttle around quarter throttle to keep it going. Sometime if you put it in park or neutral you can ease in the throttle and come out of it. I ran some seafoam through it because it almost seemed like water. Then I went for a ride one day and the bike started fine all day so when I got home I shut it off went in the house for 5 minutes or so and then went back out to put it in the garage and the battery was dead. Boosted it and let charge and it has been fine for a week or so. So today I go to take my son for a ride and the battery is dead again so I put the charger on it for an hour or so and it fires up no problem and we hit the trail. We rode probably an hour on back roads at high speed in 2×4 and everything was fine. Then I go into a trail and get up on a log that was crossing the trail and needed 4×4 and it starts sputtering. It gets so bad it will barely move. So I help it over the log with my son running the throttle and get going down the trail slowly and push the button to take it out of 4×4 and I loose all power in the dash . When I get back to the main Rd I shut it off and sure enough I can’t start it with the switch. No big deal I will just pull it so away we go again but still sputtering and getting worse so I decide I better turn around and just after I did it got so bad it would just idle and the odd time creep ahead. I stood up and shook it side to side and it quit and then it did the same thing after I got it started again. Finally it would not start and after an hour or so someone came by and gave us a ride. When i was pulling it there was nothing didn’t even hiccup . Got back with my truck and put the cables on it and it fired right up and sputtered so I played with the throttle and it seemed to get better. Sorry for the long post
Hey guys, I have a 2000 Kodiak 400. The quad is in excellent condition and even though its older, it sat in a garage for almost all its life until i bought it from the original owner. It runs and drives great but will only get up to about 25-30 mph before it hits the rev limiter. What could possibly be holding it back, or is this normal for this bike? Like I said, engine runs great, carb has been cleaned, new air filter. Could it be something with the auto trans? Belt doesn’t seem to be slipping at all though. Appreciate any help, thanks!

This is getting very annoying maybe someone can help me. 87 big bear 350 was running great and all of a sudden one day it started cutting out above half throttle.
Here’s what I’ve done, took carb out and cleaned it three times. Nothing is plugged.
Put wideband air/fuel data logger system on it went for a drive, when it stets cuttin out it was a little lean (15.3-15.7:1)
Then I jetted up so it was a little rich, tight at 13.2:1 when it was cutting out.
Then I changed to a new coil. No difference
then I heard something about the rear hand brake switch causing a rev limiter so I ohmed that switch out and it is fine.
Leaking gas from carburator drain plug. Replaced screw…….still leaking. Any help in how to fix the leak? I bought this quad used. I found a skematic of the carburator that shows a drain tube. My kodiak does not have this tube. Should I have the tube and if so where does the tube go once it leaves the carburator? Does it attach to something else of just drain to the ground? Any and all help appreciated.
