Mystery Part – 2000 Kodiak 400

Hello,
I have recently bought a 2000 Yamaha Kodiak 400 from a family member to fix up. I noticed there was no oil on the dipstick so I added a quart. I then noticed oil spilling all over the floor. Upon further inspection, I realized a part was missing and allowing the oil to drain out. I have combed the web and this forum looking for what the part might be, but with no luck. Below is a pic from a service manual, but the manual doesn’t list the part. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

91 Big Bear, not firing, help please

We bought this Big Bear brand new and have had great service out of it. Well I haven’t ridden it in a few months and got it out and battery was dead so I put my big battery charger on it, put it on 225 amps and started cranking on it and nothing, cranked over fine and nothing. Usually you pull the choke push it back in and it fires up.

I changed plugs, in the past it has fouled out and a plug change would do the trick. I put a plug in the boot, grounded it to the atv and no spark. So I get brave and stick a screwdriver in the boot and whirl it over and I don’t get iit up.

Could I have blown something with the big charger? Anything I can test? What is the first thing to go when fire is lost.

Thanks for any help or advice.

1994 Kodiak 350 not starting, clicking noise

Hi,

My father have a 1994 kodiak 350, which was starting fine up until yesterday.
While hunting, we stop for a little break, then when he went to start his ATV, there was nothing, he had to manually start it.

His first guess was that the battery was dead, so he bought a new one, and same think.
He discover that on the side of the battery there’s a round piece with some wire, and that’s where the clicking noise is coming from when he press on the start button.
Is there anything to do to solve the problem, or if that piece is completly dead ?

I want to try to help him save 50-100$ if he can just solve the problem by himself instead of buying a new piece

1999 Big Bear 350 4×4 Engine Rebuild Question

Hello – I’m really hoping to get some advice on how to pull the balancer and oil pump drive gears. The Yamaha service manual just says "pull the gears", which doesn’t help much.

Background: 1999 Yamaha Big Bear 350 4×4. I’m rebuilding the engine for my brother-in-law. The crankcase needs replacement due to broken starter idler shaft mounts.

I’ve rebuilt many motorcycle engines, and I’m fairly close to separating the cases on this 350, but I’m concerned that I’ll break the balancer and oil pump drive gears. The gears won’t budge with the puller, and I’ve gently heated the gears a bit to try and break them free, but no luck.

Since this is my first post, the system won’t allow me to add a photo – says I need 10 posts first. Darn. I’ll try to get the picture up asap.

Any advice? I didn’t see any of these engines being pulled apart on YouTube, so I thought I’d see what the experts out here recommend. Any comments/advice are appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin
