I bought this TRX300FW used last year and it is a great reliable machine. Yesterday, I noticed that oil is beading out of the rubber plug on the cylinder head. It looks like the previous owner used some junky sealant as a gasket, which is now flaking and cracking.
I’m not mechanically inclined, but I’m good with directions. Does anyone have any recommendations on how I can easily fix it? Can I patch the sealant with new sealant, do I need a new rubber plug or do I need to install a new gasket? I’ve searched for hours and I cannot find a post describing similar symptoms.
Hello all…
capable guy, hot rods, hi-perf boats, 25-30 sleds since childhood and on and on…new to wheelers tho.
picked up a bone stock arrow straight, 99% rust free, excellent plastics/seat, with reggie 96 TRX300 4×4 for $700 It looks 4-5 years old not 20
It’s been inside shed sitting/not running for better part of 6 years.
strokes over fine and feels good with kick.
Tires shot in every way wouldn’t even hold air so I refinished the wheels and did inexpensive Kenda Trail Master in stock sizes. $230
Idea was to do all fluids and fuel system and go from there.
Have on hand all new fluids/filters, Clarke tank (stocker sat dry too long it may be savable but don’t want to deal with it at this time) petcock, Caltric carb, fuel line, plug, battery…Clymer shop manual to help~$400
Will pursue brakes cables ect…
So I am in to this for about $1350 right now. As nice as it is, I figure if I’m all in it for $16-1700 when done, Ill get my $ worth riding around the ranch with the kids and doing some work here on my land.
So I’m ready to start tearing off the racks (fresh semi gloss) plastics (to ease the other work…
before I do this I want to get some ideas why the drivetrain is locked won’t rotate either way. I knew this when I bought it so I did take a little risk but if it’s cheap/easy fix and the rest pans out…I believe I score. If not I have maybe a little more in it than intended, but even if I buy others this workhorse will be around here for years.

I am a new member. I own tractors, trucks, jeeps, etc. But this is my first ATV. I have been reading and searching for the past week for information. Pretty much ever since I came across the 1985 TRX250 that I bought. Its in somewhat rough shape. It kinda a bashed in and the previous owner couldn’t get it moving.
I bought it for $220, it starts but the transmission wont engage. I have read about a few machines that were stuck in gear (As opposed to stuck in neutral or not engaging) and I am wondering your thoughts before I start opening up the machine.
So, I got it back home. Checked the oil, dirty but not low. Hooked up a battery from my riding lawn mower, got the headlight and neutral (after some shifting) light to light up. So started it up, and wow is it quiet for a 30 yo machine with half a muffler. Click the shifter up, which feels like its changing gears but without a lot of spring back. And it wont move.
My thoughts are that it would be a clutch or drive shaft it, because it feels good and the neutral light goes off. Where would you start???
Thanks and if you need any additional information just let me know.
Hello all,
Recently picked up a 1986 TRX250. When I kickstart it, there is a noise after I kick that I would describe as a low whine. Any ideas what that would be? My guess is that there is a clutch that is not disengaging somewhere, but I wanted to see if I could gather some info before I start digging into it.
I just got another 300ex the other day and was told it has +3 +1 full flight a arms. Iv never had aftermarket a arms can someone explain what the numbers mean? Also the rear end is stock. What do I need to do to equal out the width in the rear to match the front? Thanks everyone it’s been awhile since iv been on here!

I have had a TRX300 for almost 20 yrs and can hardly fault it for reliability and ruggedness. However, like me it is getting old and tired!!!! I am considering an Outlander L as a replacement mainly because of it’s higher ground clearance. 267mm vs 183mm (10.5" vs 7.2" for the "unconverted") I have had to add extra bump plates to the frame of my TRX over the years.
What about reliability???? The CVT transmission??? Stability of steep slippery country??
I only use the machine for general farm use on fairly rough country so power and speed are not a consideration.
Does anyone have actual pictures of the wiring diagram and how everything gets hooked up. I have the diagram that just shows me the colors of the wires. I’m confused on how to hook up the battery cables to the starter relay and the starter and where to hook in the fuses.
