Engine Noise!!
Had the valves adjusted, oil change, general tune up.Rode the quad home a few blocks and parked it.It ran great!
A friend of mine did it,simply because I don’t have the room in my garage, with my bikes in here.
There it sat for a couple of months.I fired it up yesterday, only to let it run for a while, just to circulate the blood.
It had been idling for about 5 minutes, when I blipped the throttle…well it hesitated, serious flat spot, and a lot of noise as it stalled out.It has done this before, but not like this time,it was louder than normal,as it died.Almost like it was on compression stroke, but no spark or something…like the engine cycle reversed as it died…very noisy as it came to a sudden stall.
So I turn it over,it fires, but barely.I managed to get it to run,but with engine noise,so I just let it die.
Pretty sure I have a valve that kissed the piston.Timing chain jumped?
Has anyone ever experienced this, and if so…what should I expect for internal damage, before we tear into it?
Thanks!
2006 Grizzly 660 Smoking/Carb Leaking – Need Help
According to the previous owner, it has been sitting for at least a year but had the rings done 500km ago. It got put away wet so I’ve spent a few days cleaning it up and got around to starting it today.
Before starting:
– changed the oil and filter
– installed new battery
– took carb apart and gave it a good cleaning
– drained/cleaned the gas tank and fuel filter inside the tank (the filter was pretty plugged up)
– cleaned air filter (and a nest from the airbox)
When I got everything back together, it fired right up and idled strong. However, I noticed right away that gas was literally pouring out of the overflow tube from the carb. The needle and seat were pretty bad so I suspect an issue there that I will need to re-address, and the float may need to be adjusted.
At the same time, white smoke began pouring from the cylinder from under the gas tank (not out the exhaust), almost like it was steaming but smelled foul. Not sure if it smelled like burning fuel or burning oil. Could the carb issue be realted to the smoke (too rich, washing out the cylinder or something), or do I have other problems? If so, what might be the culprit?
Looking for some direction!
Thanks
timing marks wrong?
i have an interesting question.I have a 2002 660 grizzly.the timing marks for some reason are incorrect.A friend of mine a very experienced diesel mechanic was giving a hand setting my valves.According to the manual we were following we found the marks was wrong. So we pulled the plug used a rod to find tdc.set the valves to the gap according to the manual.I can only assume because i bought the bike used with no knowledge of its history. My guess would be the timing gears are not in time ,there for the timing marks is off. which brings me to this question, can i accurately set the valves?and would this be the reason the bike is so cold blooded on start up?
