Hey All, A couple of things going on with my Sportsman. 07 Sportsman 500 HO X2. Both are quite intermittent and have no rhyme or reason to them. I live a good ways from a decent shop so I want to figure this out on my own. Just a matter of time before it strands me and that won’t be good. My wife and I have some ATV adventures coming up, so it’s time to get ‘er fixed.
1) Once in a while, the machine can’t seem to get of its own way. Exhaust smells like it’s burning rich and sometimes it backfires. I usually just stop, shut it off, fire it back up and it’s back to normal. Sometimes it behaves all day long. Other times, not so much.
2) Sometimes the machine just shuts down. Like the key was turned off. nothing on the display, no warning, just quits. Usually after giving it a few minutes (5 – 10), it’ll fire back up and I’m on the way. It hadn’t done it for a couple of months until out of the blue yesterday it did it again.
Been wearing out this forum and the internet trying to chase these / this gremlin down. Today I learned about retrieving the codes and got a 22, TPS open or shorted to ground. That was the only code in memory. Some of what I read here today also points to a faulty PDM. Got too late for me to spend more time on it and will have to dig deeper on the machine tomorrow.

I have a 2005 trail blazer, I was running it down the street and it bogged down like it wasn’t getting gas. It died, tried to pull start it but no luck. Pulled and cleaned the carb. It’s getting gas and spark. it seem to have compression, but still won’t start. Any ideas cause I’ve run out of them.
2013 sportsman 500 ho…i changed the ignition and it keeps blowing the main fuse 20 amp……not sure why maybe wires r touching somewhere? Any help would be great
I just bought a nice 2004 Sportsman 700 EFI, 660 miles and about 100hrs. Bought it from an older gentleman who was the original owner, nice looking, clean well taken care of machine but………..
It runs like crap! I have spent the last couple days reading posts about this particular year and the issues with the EFI system. I don’t seem to see too many people with my exact problem more like parts and pieces of them. Here is what is going on:
First time I noticed I was seeing what it would do and it wouldn’t go over 40mph it felt like it was maxed out is the best way to describe it. After some more riding I noticed it was real sluggish around 30mph or so, at times throttle wide open and no response. On the way home it backfired a little bit also. I’m not sure if this is heat related, the fan is cycling normally.
Most of the issues I have read about seem to include erratic idle and dying and not being able to restart the machine, I have NOT had any of these issues. It just feels like there is a governor on it at times and some sputtering and backfiring I have had it up to 60mph with more to go, so I know it’s able to "run normal" at times. If I keep it around 25mph there are NO issues. I’ve only put about 12 miles on it
I plan on checking all the electrical connections for the Tbap and TPS sensors, also do a fuel pressure test. Can somebody recommend a good affordable tester I can buy from a chain store?
So far from what I’ve read and my experience I think it’s the fuel pump and I’ve read all about the Carter pump and how many have gone with it. It seems too strange to me that this problem only occurs at higher speed and RPM. What are your thoughts on this?
New to ATV’s…My atv dealer advised me to spray penetrating oil on hard to reach places to remove dust & dirt. Sounds odd. Any thoughts?
How do you guys clean yours after a ride?
I have a 2010 Sportsman 800 EFI and the speedometer is not showing what gear it is in. Every once in awhile the speedo will show one of the gears and its usually wrong. I have looked at the wires entering the transmission switch and all appear okay.
I have read in a lot of forums that there’s a 50/50 chance on if the problem could could be the switch or the resistor module. I have looked in my service manual to help locate the resistor module but still cant seem to locate the module.
Any help with locating the resistor module would be greatly appreciated.
I have been having this problem since the winter broke here in NYS. Intermittent issue, though it seems to be getting worse. Here goes:
I tend to ride using a lot of thumb, I will preface this with that statement. Off the line, I tend to mash the throttle for a bit and ease off as I achieve the speed I am looking for. In trail conditions, I ride with a lot of thumb, decelerate or brake even, then more thumb. I do not often hold a nice, steady RPM. So the issue seems to be showing at a couple of points in the ride. When letting off the thumb after accelerating, the RPMs sometimes drop fast, not wind down as usual – like there is no power there. Back on the throttle sometimes it just dogs. The pitch of the engine gets all blappy sounding and no power. RPM’s generally stay at whatever they were as long as I have the thumb down. Another point in the ride is in normal acceleration, as it winds up the RPMs it will "cut out" and get that blappy sound, no power. Sometimes I can feather it and get them to come back and then accelerate, however most times I just have to let off, and then baby the machine back up to speed (if on long stretch of trail/road). Last evidence, I have a very steep incline and when I attempt to go up it in high, I get the "cut out" loss of power within a few feet. Then I switch to low and it walks right up the steep section. However I think it did make the noise and cut out one time when I did it, as I was holding a pretty steady RPM up the slope and the back wheels started to spin so it took longer to get up the slope, more steady RPM seems to be associated with this issue. Figuring at this point that the issue does not show in low because the machine is more direct drive and does not hold the RPM or slow advance of RPM. I can’t really study that one too much because the slipping wheels on this incline makes for messy drawers – if the machine lost power and momentum on this incline it would be an insurance claim (and maybe a helicopter ride) instead of a posting on our site here.
So my operating theory is carb issues. Something in the bowl that gets sucked up in there after high fuel demand, but intermittently. Thought it could be electrical, the way it is slightly intermittent, but I just (for some reason) don’t think it is. There is also the thought that a clutch might be going but when this happens I do not see or smell any burning clutch or belt.
It seems that I can get it to happen pretty often, but when I try to capture it on video it does not do it or the buffeting of the wind masks the engine noise – I will post a vid soon.
