2007 X2 800 EFI fuel pump not running – works now?

Here’s one for the book. Out of the blue it will crank, but not start. Get out the service manual l got with the purchase in 2007. Start problem diagnosis:

No blink codes – good
Check ETC & throttle cable – good
Check EFI rail – NO FUEL
Look for damaged/streched wires or loose connectors – all goodk
Check for power to fuel pump: 12 volts initially then drops to 4.5 volt after 2 seconds.

Disconnect ECU harness, inspect, clean & re-seat – no fuel
Disconnect/reconnect battery to reset ECU – no fuel
Disconnect POWER relay, inspect, clean & re-seat – no fuel
Disconnect FAN relay, inspect, clean & re-seat – no fuel
Swap relays FAN to POWER & POWER to FAN – no fuel

Hot wire fuel pump: Apply 12v power to A & C pins (red+/brown-) – fuel pump doesn’t run.

So I’m thinking bad fuel pump. On a whim I reconnect the fuel pump 3-pin connector and turn key to on position – fuel pump runs, pressurizes and engine starts fine… WTF, but I’m happy.

I’m still puzzled why hot wiring the fuel pump didn’t work? I did notice the POWER relay now clicks twice, in short succession, compared to only once when the fuel pump wasn’t working. Maybe some can shed light on this change in relay operation?

Obviously something changed. My best guess is that with all the testing of the fuel pump, I burnished the male & female pins of the 3-pin fuel pump connectors, which cleaned up the electrical connection.

Time will tell.

P.S.

Even though it’s my first post, I thought I would share the experience.

Smoking like a freight train???

I picked up an 04 500 Ranger with a bad motor. I put a motor in it that I had ran before and didn’t smoke. I got everything on it today and running. Motor is running good and strong. At idle no smoke at all. I let it sit 5-10 minutes with no smoke. When I start riding it and get on it it smokes like crazy, blowing oil all over the tire and everywhere. The vent tube seems to be fine. Unless I’ve got it over filled with oil I’m not sure whats going on. The fact it doesn’t smoke at idle or low throttle then smokes so heavily when on it harder has me confused. Any thoughts on what could be going on would be appreciated. Thanks

Need help with my primary clutch

I bought a project 2007 sportsman 700 atv. I’m disabled and bought this quad as a fun project to rebuild. (I’m recovering from leukemia) The clutch (ebs) looks like it was dropped. It has a chip in the fixed sheave as shown in the picture. Will it be okay to use as is? I would also like to know if the fixed sheave on this ebs clutch is interchangeable with a fixed sheave non ebs clutch? Thanks for your help.

95′ Magnum 425 2×4: Trouble at WOT

I just got a used 95 magnum for $900. Its got a couple of issues but the one I’m stuck on is this. Thing always starts up fine, unless it is hot, then you’ve got to throttle it a bit while cranking. The idle is a little weird. I can set the idle with the adjustment, but if I rev it in neutral when I throttle off the rpms drop, but stay at a higher rate than I set the idle at. If I then choke it and then turn the choke off, I can get it back to the idle I want. Along with this there is a different issue. If I rev it in neutral it’ll rev as high as I’d want it, but once I’m accelerating in High, I can get to about thirty or thirty-five mph, and then the engine seems to bog. It doesn’t die or anything, but it’ll sort of surge back a little and then rev up a little. And here’s the strange part: if I raise the idle I can get it to go faster, and bog at a higher speed. Anyone got any advice?

Primary Clutch question???

So I need help either winning or losing a bet with my buddy. Can you replace the primary clutch assy on a 250 Trail Boss 4X4 with one off of a Trail Boss 350? I am thinking no because of the engine size difference but my buddy says yes you can, that "size doesn’t matter":ditsch:
