02 sportsman 500 running issues
02 sportsman 500 h.o 1800 miles and 300 hours. Gets used around the house and short trips out ice fishing. It’s always seemed to start well even in the really cold temps (added a bigger battery). Last winter is when I noticed something was going on. It would ideal fine and all of the sudden it would die just like someone turned it off but would start back up. Fast forward to this summer it starts ok but sometimes dies when giving it gas. Other times runs just fine but it’s getting to the point it’s dieing more then not. When and if I can get past the point of the initial throttle it usually runs pretty good. I can still pull 62 mph out of it and motor pulls strong like it was 10 years ago! Even after putting 10 miles on it at 45 mph I can pull of the road and when I let of the gas it will ideal for a few seconds and just shut off, (usually lunges forwards when it dies) and some times it will fire and die, others times really hard to get started back up. Usual it starts with just a bit of throttle after dong that but when you give it gas again it dies. Using the choke doesn’t help at all. I’ve had it just shut off pulling a drag at higher rpm’s too and then again trouble getting fired back up.
I know most people reading this are thinking ETC
and it possibly could be but I’ve adjusted it and doesn’t fix it. I would bypass it but can seem to find out what color wires it is. Second thoughts are worn cam lobs but it has great power and at times can run like it has nothing wrong with it. I must confess I’ve never set the valves in 300 hours:shocked1: it’s not the C clip on the needle although it acts like it is. I never inspected the C clip but on less it’s sliding back into place at times it can’t be that. I still need to check the slide diafram for a pinhole. I did clean the carb and it was spotless, all clamps are tight on the carb boots and air box gasget is sealing well.
The next things I’m going to do is:
Check the diafram on the carb slide for a pinhole.
Check the fuel pump breather again (checked it 2 years ago)
Put a new plug in it
Try to bypass the ETC
New fuel filter
Set the valves
CDI has crossed my mind too, 2 years ago I was pulling a drag and it just shut off on me and wouldn’t fire back up for 3 hours then it started and ran fine and someone told be my CDI got hot?
it’s not worth much and was thinking of upgrading so don’t want to start throwing $ at it. I was just at the dealer and can pick up a 15 sportsman 570 holdover for around 5000.00
I know it really sounds like the ETC but I must make it clear it has also died with using 1/4 to 1/2 throttle too but 98% of the time once it’s up and moving it runs fine. It getting it moving that seems to be the issue!
Thanks
ATV Differentials
I am looking for a used, small differential for a project, so this is why I am asking.
CV Boot Ripped.. Again
Where can I find CV boots that are meant for aftermarket axles & CV Joints. The universal ones I get seem to small on the large end and make it overly tough to get on.
It’s for a Rhino axle on a Sportsman 570.
Thanks in advance,

fluid changes
Uh … where’s this supposed to go?!?
As I was working to access the carburetor (to clean it), I saw this tucked under the fuel tank:
If you can’t make it out from the photo, one end of this tube is fastened to the top of the cylinder and the other end is … well … just swinging in the breeze. The clamp is in place, but it’s not connected to anything.
Any ideas where this unconnected end is supposed to go?
Thanks in advance for any insights
