low beam headlights burning out

Had a problem with Speedometer on 2000 sportsman 500. Speedometer quit working along with awd not working. low beam headlights burned out, (not sure if this is connected to speedometer issue). Tried replacing the Tip 48 regulator inside speedometer to no avail. Bought new speedometer and installed it. Also purchased two led lights for replacing low beam lamps. Everything seemed to work fine until about 3 minutes later when the speedometer went black and the led lamps burned out. A few minutes later the speedometer started working again but no low beam lights. I have checked voltage to lamps and am getting 14 volts when engine running and accelerated slightly.12 volts not running, I have no idea why lights are burning out. If anyone has any idea on this issue, I would appreciate any info. I don’t want to purchase any more lamps and have them do the same thing at 20.00 a lamp. I am afraid I will blow another speedometer and can’t afford to at 300.00 each.

2012 sportsman 550eps

Can anyone tell me how many grease fittings/zerks should be on the 2012 sportsman 550 eps? I found 18 total, 10 on the rear suspension & 8 on the front suspension. I did try to find the info from the forum before I asked and my owner’s manual does not say either. I did see some threads for the 2014 that said 19. Also I can see two different u-joints one in the front & one in the rear but neither one has a grease fitting on it. Any feedback will be appreciated.

96 Xplorer runs bad when engines hot

I have a 96 Xplorer I bought from my grandpa. He didn’t do a lot of maintenance to it so it needed help when I got it. It didn’t seem to run good when the engine got hot. It was doggy, lost a lot of power, terrible throttle response, just overall runs bad. I found the air intake box was cracked so I epoxied that. Then I found someone put the wrong pilot jet in the carb so I put the correct one in. Also did a bunch of other maintenance like new tires, tie rod ends, drive belt, spark plug, routine maintenance etc. Well now it runs and drives really good when the engines cool or at normal temp but once it’s hot I start experiencing the same doggy no power issue. I’m not sure what would cause it to run good when at normal temp but bad when hot. Thinkin it might be in need of a top end kit but just wanted to ask you guys what you think and make sure before I put any more money into it. Thanks so much guys

What am I getting into?

Have 1700 miles on the ’14 850 XP…on my trip this weekend, started hearing some chirping from the belt box, sounding like a turkey call, when idling. It got worse of the course of the day, now I can’t shift while the machine is running. Is this probably just a belt issue? Also, has a bit of a rough idle… If its just the belt, do I need any special tools to change the belt?

I have a big trip coming up and if it needs to go into the shop, I need to get it in asap. If its just the belt, who makes a good aftermarket one?

1999 Polaris Sportsman 500 – Looking for info & advice

Sorry that this is a bit lengthy but looking for some insight and guidance.

Well I just bought a used Polaris Sportsman 500 yesterday… I took a chance on it because it does not run; previous owner said it had sat for 2 years, then it was started 3 times in the last year but ran real rough and then they couldn’t get it started again and has now sat for 6 months. I hope that’s true and the motor isn’t locked up but only time will tell. Got it at a good price though so if that were the case I know I could make money on it parting it out. It’s my first bike and I figure there’s no better way to learn than by having to work on one.

Anyhow – right now my plan is as follows….. Take gas tank off and clean it out well along with the petcock and clean/rebuild the carb. Get a new spark plug for it and install. Also, charge the current battery or get a new one and then start working through other possible issues. It will not pull start either. When I tried to pull start water came out on the pull start rope so it told me there was water in it, but it doesn’t appear that there was water or mud in air filter box or anything so hopefully its not in the engine. I’m guessing I will also need to replace the stator. I took out the top and bottom plugs today on the recoil start and let the sludge drain out. It was kind of a muddy, watery oil – would that be normal for one that got water in it? Also, I’m guessing I won’t get any spark if the stator is bad so should I go after the stator before the new plug? When I had it hooked up to my truck and turned the key there was power to all of the lights and dash so I would assume the CDI, solenoid and regulator are ok; or is that a bad assumption? Last question, when I tried the electric start, nothing happened so I assume that’s a bad ignition coil or starter or both?

I look forward to hearing back from some folks and any advice and insight is greatly appreciated. Also, if I could get a service manual that’d be awesome! I just want to say thanks in advance!
