winch roller

Hello all,
I have a 06 sportsman 800 that I need to get a plow for, motoalliance is selling the three winch roller as an accessory for the kit it’s only $40 add on but is it worth it? I from Wisconsin and as many of you from this region know winters can be long, does having the plow on kink the cable so bad I should consider this? Does anyone have this and what’s your opinion? I will be using my machine for all kinds of things mostly work on the property with the occasional ride on local trails and up north, the plow will be on and off all season. Any input would be great.

Understanding Octane Ratings of Fuel

I want to republish this issue as its own thread so that it can be found on a search. Mods, please make this a Sticky under Performance.

Octane rating is an anti-knock or predetonation prevention designation – not related to power. Using a higher Octane rating fuel in 87 octane engines may reduce your power.

An OCTANE RATING is related to engine compression – NOT POWER. Using higher Octane does NOTHING but take more dollars out of your wallet. For any engine, use the Octane rating stated in the user manual.

Reply: And you don’t think 11:1 comp ratio deserves premium? 2013 850 XP.

Please feel free to run whatever you like. You will not get any more power. Your manual calls for 87 Octane. Octane rating is an anti-knock or predetonation prevention designation.

I just read an article that said higher octane fuels are designed to burn slower for higher compression engines to help prevent predetonation. I know like most folks, you pull up to the pump and see 87, 89, 91, even 93 octane and think higher must be better. Exxon even promotes put a 93 tiger in your tank on that little pump screen. But I think they just want your money knowing most people don’t know what the octane rating is for.

But here is the big rub, if higher octane gas burns slower, do you actually REDUCE power in your 87 octane rated engine using 91 or 93 octane gas? Wouldn’t that be a hoot. You think you are getting more power, but you really get less power because you are getting lower HP on the engineered power curve for that engine.

2014 Sportsman 850 Radiator clogging up

I have a 2014 Sportsman 850 XP PS HO. Just about every time me and my friends went out riding I would end up in what I call "Limp In Mode" where the temp light would light and blink and the RPMs would be limited. Let it cool and I could go home and clean the radiator out and everything would be good. Stuff like mud and little grass seed and junk. I thought about a relocate kit but really didn’t want that up on top. Then I came up with a idea that actually works. I made a shield out of some aluminum siding(just thin aluminum I had that was on a roll). The shields go on either side of the radiator to the front of the bike in the inside of the fender well. Two small sheet metal screws secure the shield on each side to the fan shroud and then it butts up to the inside of the front grill. This keeps the mud from slinging from the front tires on to the radiator when going through a mud hole. On the front of the bike (in front of the radiator) I cut a piece of window screen to fit the opening and secured it with one of those plastic push pins that is used to hold the fenders together. I have been out riding in some pretty rough areas, one was a trip to Busco, and have yet to hit overheat or "Limp In Mode" Nor have I had to clean the radiator. Just thought I would put this up here if someone else is having the same problem. I will post some pics in the morning and I can E-Mail the patterns for the shields if someone needs them. I made the templates out of cardboard then traced them on the aluminum. This was a real easy, cheap fix that actually works like a dream.

2015 Sportsman 850 SP Projector Retrofit

Here’s the build list:

-60mm RGB Halos
-morimoto 35W ballasts w/ 6500k HID bulbs
-black out reflector bowl, paint shrouds orange to match orange accents
-tricled headlight surrounds
-RGB Demon Eyes
-I’ll be using my Trotec laser engraver to etch either "850 SP" or the "Polaris" logo into the projector lenses.

Handlebar Headlight
-morimoto Mini H1 6.0 Bi-xenon projector
-gatling gun 2.0 shroud
-80mm RGB Halo
-morimoto 35W ballasts with 6500k HID bulb

Reasoning:

I’ve always loved tinkering with vehicles and dreaming up custom projects for fun. Some might say this is over kill, but it’s going to be a fun project. The stock headlights are disappointing at the most. The 3rd headlight shines in the trees, the main headlights have no bulb shields and blind other riders on the trail (as does the 3rd headlight.)

With bi-xenon projectors, they’ll have a Sharp cutoff, evenly distributed, wide beam on low, and all 3 will be able to be switched to high beams for an intense high beam. Another good reason for this is making the 3rd headlight usable so it doesn’t shine into the tops of trees.

I’ll be ordering all of the components for this swap within a few weeks and plan to have it done within 2 months.

The reason I’m not starting right away is I have another open project that should be done very soon. I have an atv guru front bumper and oem Polaris rear bumper that is being powder coated orange to match the orange accents. Also, I am having a set of oem handlebars powder coated orange as well.

I can’t wait to show you guys a step by step of the project and I hope that everyone enjoys the project as much as I do!
