Patrick Henry Student to Attend DARPA Robotics Challenge

Jared Voight to cover event on behalf of Polaris

Minneapolis, May 28, 2015 — Polaris® Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) has selected Patrick Henry High School Student Jared Voight to accompany Polaris officials at the upcoming DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) Finals to be held June 5-6, at the Fairplex, in Pomona, Calif. Voight will be able to write about his experiences on Polaris’ social media sites, including Facebook and Twitter.

“Polaris is excited to offer Jared the opportunity to represent Minnesota Robotics Students at the DARPA Robotics Challenge,” said David Longren, vice president of Off-Road and Off-Road Engineering for Polaris. “Jared’s enthusiasm for robotics made him the perfect candidate to accompany us at the event.”

Voight is currently a sophomore at Patrick Henry High School, in Minneapolis, Minn. and is a member of the school’s FIRST® Team 2500 Herobotics. A core mission of the team is to encourage young people to be science and technology leaders by building science, engineering and technology skills that inspire innovation. High school members of the team provide mentorship to middle school and grade school students across several regional states. This outreach of Patrick Henry students to younger people influences future generations of engineers to think critically about science, math and technology at a younger age. Voight has been a member of the team for two years and will be one of the three co-captains next year. Dylan Miracle, an engineering teacher at Patrick Henry will accompany Voight on the trip.

"Representing Polaris at the DARPA Robotics Competition is the experience of a lifetime,” said Voight. “This is my first time ever having such an amazing opportunity, and having it be about robotics makes the trip even more phenomenal. I can use the skills I’ve learned in our school’s robotics program on this trip as I meet with some of the best robotics minds in the industry."

The DARPA Robotics Challenge was created to spur development of robotic technology that can help humans to better respond to future disasters. The Challenge Finals will have robots perform a number of tasks in a continuous course, simulating what might be encountered in a real disaster situation. Polaris is providing DARPA with the company’s RANGER XP 900 EPS in one of the most difficult tasks, to help demonstrate a robot’s ability to operate and to egress from a vehicle. The Polaris RANGER XP 900 is one of the best-selling vehicles in its class and widely-used around the world with disaster-relief organizations such as the National Guard, Salvation Army and other first responders.

Belt for use with Comet clutch

Both primary and secondary clutches on my 2004 Sportsman 600 Twin needed attention. I purchased the Sportsman with over 2500 hours and over 6500 miles. I knew going in that there were several areas that needed work, but the price paid reflected that.

I pulled the clutches off and ordered a rebuild kit for the secondary. I knew I could fabricate the special tool needed for that rebuild. I took the primary to the dealer since the cost of the tools needed for a rebuild far exceeded the one hour of shop time to install the parts to rebuild the primary.

Turned out that the primary had stress cracks in the sheaves so it was decision time. A factory clutch was just too costly to purchase for a quad with my kind of miles and hours and one I don’t use all that much so I went with a Comet clutch for less than half the price of factory.

Fast forward to the install. Everything went well, but I ended up with the common problem of creep and inability to shift when the quad is running. I already knew this was a good possibility since I’d been reading every post I could find on the Comet clutch.

I fiddled with the washer-like shims, and double checked the clutch alignment, but it became evident that was a dead end. I’d read several posts where it was suggested that you use a non EBS belt, but all of these particular Sportsman had EBS. I picked up a non EBS belt for a different Polaris quad that had the same basic dimensions and as bonus it was fractionally longer. When installing that one I knew it was going to be a bust, and it was…same problem…creep.

More searching got me nowhere so I call the folks at Comet. It was suggested I use a Comet belt, 300638C. I was even pointed to a supplier that had some in stock, beltpalace.com. This belt is slightly more narrow, as is the Comet clutch, and it was about 3/4 inch longer OD.

Popped it on, creep is gone, shifting while running is back as well. I’ll be monitoring it for wear over the next year, but I don’t anticipate any issues since the construction seemed as robust as the factory and the other belt, which I was able to just return since it saw no use beyond the 20 second trial in the garage.

Obviously the belt I needed and used might not be right for your model, but the procedure is solid. BTW, the number of the person in the know at Comet is 608 774 0481. The helpful guy at the beltpalace is at 317 519 9020.

Hope this helps when the next person comes along looking to install a Comet clutch.

Well my 400ex met a pred 500 and the polaris won the battle

Well guys my 05 400ex is becoming a 07 400ex or atleast the frame will be lol. The frame was twisted and one a-arm snapped in half. Here are some pictures of the progress i made while waiting for my 07 frame. The wreck also ruined my ohlins shock so i ordered some tci remote resi triple rates should be a nice little upgrade since i didnt have to pay to fix the quad because good friends fix others quads when they destroy them lol………..btw everyone walked away sore bodys and egos but besides that ok.
