Can’t go over 22mph

2008 Can Am Outlander 650 Max.

Drove to the store a few days ago, and once I filled it up with gas and tried to leave, I turned on the engine switch and turned the keys and nothing came on the speedometer. Tried it two more times and let it sit there on the third try for a moment and it finally turned on. Drove home 5 miles, no problems.

Next day I drove back the 5 miles to the store again and as I was driving down the road, it slowed itself from 30mphs to about 10. When I turned into the parking lot it started spurting, sounded like it backfired and then I pulled it to a stop. Started it again maybe 10 minutes later, and drove it 5 miles back to work going from 20-50mphs depending on parts of the road, and it was fine. I cleaned the battery terminals and hooked the battery up again that night. Battery was bought in May. Was fine for two days.

Drove it 6 miles into town yesterday and it slowed itself down again and then came to a complete stop and turned off. The speedometer was still on, the machine just stopped itself and turned the engine off. I gave it a moment and started it again, and drove another mile to my friend’s house and it worked fine. He helped me with an oil change and a new oil filter. We drove it around town and it did fine.

Driving home last night from the oil change and I started going over 20mph and it jerked once then slowed itself down and the engine turned off. Started it again, and thought "I better get home as soon as possible" so I sped off, it did it again. So I kept it under 20mphs for four miles, once I hit 22 on a clear section of road, it did it again. Slowed itself down, and shut the engine off but the speedometer was still on. Drove about 15-20mphs the rest of the way home and it didn’t do this again. if I hit 22 it does this immediately. What is wrong with my ATV? I live in rural Alaska and this is my only means on transportation. Thank you.
