Drove to the store a few days ago, and once I filled it up with gas and tried to leave, I turned on the engine switch and turned the keys and nothing came on the speedometer. Tried it two more times and let it sit there on the third try for a moment and it finally turned on. Drove home 5 miles, no problems.
Next day I drove back the 5 miles to the store again and as I was driving down the road, it slowed itself from 30mphs to about 10. When I turned into the parking lot it started spurting, sounded like it backfired and then I pulled it to a stop. Started it again maybe 10 minutes later, and drove it 5 miles back to work going from 20-50mphs depending on parts of the road, and it was fine. I cleaned the battery terminals and hooked the battery up again that night. Battery was bought in May. Was fine for two days.
Drove it 6 miles into town yesterday and it slowed itself down again and then came to a complete stop and turned off. The speedometer was still on, the machine just stopped itself and turned the engine off. I gave it a moment and started it again, and drove another mile to my friend’s house and it worked fine. He helped me with an oil change and a new oil filter. We drove it around town and it did fine.
Driving home last night from the oil change and I started going over 20mph and it jerked once then slowed itself down and the engine turned off. Started it again, and thought "I better get home as soon as possible" so I sped off, it did it again. So I kept it under 20mphs for four miles, once I hit 22 on a clear section of road, it did it again. Slowed itself down, and shut the engine off but the speedometer was still on. Drove about 15-20mphs the rest of the way home and it didn’t do this again. if I hit 22 it does this immediately. What is wrong with my ATV? I live in rural Alaska and this is my only means on transportation. Thank you.

A few days ago I got a steal on my second Polaris, a 06 500 EFI with just over 2500 miles, it was only $1000. The first day it had a few issues but was overall great. The next day it would start and idle nicely, but as soon as you touch the throttle it dies. I pulled the plug and it is soaked in gas and black. I have adjusted the throttle cable and check the connections to the MAP and TPS. Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.
I have done tons of research on why my drain plug stripped. I went by hondas specs and it is now all the way stripped the threads… i have now read about the casting threads. I will be going to my buddies shop to use their tap kit to re-drill the hole to bigger size. I have also read where people broke the casting threads and the pan alone is 500$. Is there a way if i did break the threads to get the metals out of the pan? and to also add i have seen where people just drilled a big hole and used a boat drain plug instead of an actual drain bolt.
I wish it was simple to where i could get drop the pan and put a new one back off but i have seen where you have to pull the entire motor out…
ANY HELP OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREAT !!!!
THANKS FOR THE HELP FROM EVERYONE AND REMEMBER RIDE SAFE BUT HARD:yeahbaby01:
So I have an older fourtrax 300, I’m not even sure of the year. I would say 90’s, I use it for work every day. Well it wouldn’t idle so I cleaned the carb somewhat, with the help of my "mechanic" buddies. They didn’t wanna mess with it much and said it was good enough. Still wouldn’t idle so they told me it was the valves? They’re good mechanics just kinda lazy, so I figured ok cool. They didn’t wanna help so with the help of YouTube I pieced things together and tried to adjust the valves. My question is, how do I tell when the cam Lobes are facing straight down???
Have a 2011 TRX680 that will foul a plug every 2 or 3 days of running at a feedlot so it’s getting a lot of miles. We have a fleet of them so I’ve switched all the throttle body components except the throttle body. The Air Temp sensor in the airbox and the ECUs too. Any other ideas on this?
Why:
Please help me and others, by contributing to a useful "best practices in restoring an old Polaris Xplorer" thread. Hopefully, we can generate a good list to help myself and the whole community. I can synthesize a checklist including consensus agreements.
Background:
I am attempting to revive a 1998 Polaris 300 Xplorer 4×4 that has been stored in a open-door huge machine shed/pole barn for 10yrs, due to a suspected reverse over-ride switch problem. I get the ATV for free if I can get it running. I tend to believe there are potential problems that could be avoided by pre-starting maintenence…anyone agree? Do we have a related thread already on the topic (I couldn’t find one easily)?
So Far:
only preliminary tried to start with pull-starter. Needs new battery. Didn’t start.
Planned:
Replacespark plug (needed or not, examine old one)
Replace old gas & replace with fresh
replace fuel filter
Replace Oil change & filter
Clean battery cables
Clean air filter
Clean battery cables
Clean and visually inspect overall machine, remove plastics to facilitate access
Obtain new battery (jumpstart in meantime with car-sized 12-volt)
Help:
transmission flush?
carburetor maintenance?
….Then try starting via car-sized battery and test functionality and find additional problems, determine if further work worth the cost to continue restoration.
hi everyone, i need someone to help me make a wire diagram for the polaris plow actuator harness since i am unable to find the original harness part to buy.
