’94 Kodiak 400 intermittant running like crap
94 Kodiak 400, mostly runs great. I rebuilt the carb due to the same issues im having now. I’ve had the carb apart 5 or 6 times now, wondering if the wear on the slide is causing the problem. I doubt it thought, as its intermittent.
Sometimes when the bike is cold, impossible to start without a lot of cranking with choke full. Other times fires right up.
When cold, it tends to backfire through the exhaust and intake… very strange.
When on the road, it generally runs great at WOT, but at mid throttle, its almost like its loading with fuel and starts dying, backfiring. It will do this until it totally dies. If I pump the throttle or hold at WOT it will usually clean up and run like it should.
Occasionally it will misssurge at WOT, but not as much when its really good and hot.
When it dies out, I have to use full choke (even when hot) to get the thing running. Once running, if I shut choke off it will kill bike. But immediately after, if it turn choke off, bike will start and idle. VERY confusing, im usually really good with carbs.
I’ve tried different mix jet settings, rebuilt carb, set float height (how do I properly set float height on the angled carb body face!?
Getting to the point where Im ready to just order a new carb. Compression is good, timing is good, air filter is just a foam wrap over a metal mesh, air flow is fine. post carb intake boot is fine.
When it runs, its usually very good. When it starts burping and farting and dying, it super frustrating, especially when you don’t know whats up.
Sometime it like the float sticks open, other times closed.
HELP before I burn this frigging thing!
Diff/oil confusion
From the manual I have:- the final drive is the rear diff and holds 160mL of oil. The differential case is the front diff and holds 350mL of oil.
But that doesn’t make sense to me, the rear diff (final drive) is a far bigger case than the front diff (differential case) but only holds half the oil, is this correct??

Hatfield & McCoy Trails
We stayed at Wild Willy’z ATV Rezort near Ashland. We had an amazing time riding the Pocahontas, Indian Ridge and Pinnacle Creek trails. The first day we rode over 120 miles, the second day was about 100 miles. The trails are exhilarating, and the locals are definitely atv friendly. It did seem a little strange to me at first to legally ride on the streets to wherever you might want to go. It’s not every day you can ride up to the fuel station to top your machine off… Pretty damn cool.
Also, I highly recommend two way radios with the helmet kit. It made things easy as far as not having to eat dust and knowing when/where the lead is breaking to another trail.
We rode a lot and didn’t really take any pictures. We did manage to take a couple videos of us playing in a creek.

Newest project bike build…
Bought off craigslist for a whopping $400. Was sitting in a field for several years with no tires/rims.

Was told it smoked and es was bad. I pushed it to the back of the barn for a few months. Till the other day when my buddy said he had some spare time to work on the motor.
Plans are to fully rebuild the motor, strip down to the frame. Clean 100% while the motor is out. Convert to foot shift while keeping the es display. And buying all new white plastics to match my pioneer 1000. Will be running 28" outlaw 2’s and a small gear reduction.

Renegade questions
1. I bought a 3 yr. extended warranty and the dealer says to goto a dealer for the first service at 100 miles. Do you really had to have the dealer do it or can you do it yourself and keep receipts for oil and filter? And is it really 100 miles or 200 miles?
2. The manual says not to use cleaners with petroleum in them on the rene plastics. I’ve always used SC1 or Turtle wax shine on my grizzly. What are you guys using to keep your gades shinny and new looking?
3. Is there anything I should replace right off the bat that could be a possible weak point on these units? I have a trip coming up in a couple weeks to Paiute Utah and would try to minimize any possible weak points.
4. My air filter came un-oiled. I ran UNI filters in my grizzly and oiled them religiously. Should the dealer have oiled the outer foam on it?
5. At what speeds are you supposed to be running in low gear? Under 10 Mph or lower?
So far I love this machine and hope it lasts and serves me as well as my Grizzly did. It looks like it’s going 100 miles an hour sitting there!!LOL!!! Thank you for any help in advance!!!!!—–Tim
