I had something really weird happen while taking my 85 250R out for a spin the other day. I bought this trike back in 85 and have owned it ever since. It is stock with exception of the Uni air filter. I am running Maxima Formula K2 at around 32:1 or 40:1, spark plug is an NGK BR8EV gapped according to spec(stock is BR9ES). I don’t remember the main jet size, but I am running leaner main jet than stock 142 size (altitude is about 4500 ft). I am running the stock pilot jet with the needle on the 1st groove, and Boyeesen reeds (spelling?) It runs great. Like I said, I took it for a spin to run some gas through it. On a stretch of dirt road, I briefly ran it wide open. When I let off the throttle, it remained revving almost wide open. I thought the carb slide was stuck open but it wasn’t. I hit the kill switch and it stayed running! I reached above the head and pulled the plug wire and it STAYED RUNNING! I thought it was going to blow up. I finally stalled it with the clutch. I let it set a while, started it, and all was fine. I rode it home at a pretty calm speed and I checked the plug, it looked fine, except for being a little wet. Now it does have a recent top end with very few hours on it. I run 90 octane, because it is all we have where I live. The manual recommends 91. Has anyone ever heard of something like this? What could have caused it. It could not have a hot spot due to carbon build up on the head or piston. I doubt it was a fuel/octane issue since it was fresh fuel. The only thing I can come up with is the spark plug. Maybe it got too hot and was igniting fuel despite the kill switch being off AND the spark plug cable being disconnected? I am at a loss. Thanks for any ideas.
Need help looking to get a new slip-on pipe with programmer. I have a 2016 outlander Xmr 1000. Not sure which one to get I know RJWC is more money. I had 2 HMF pipe on other ATV’s and love them!! Let me know what you guys think thank you.
I bought the wheeler with the problems. I have spent several hours digging around the net trying to figure it out. It stays in 1st gear and in limp mode in reverse. I have changed the angle sensor and also the CDI. I read on presenting the angle sensor and turned it back until it hit the big Allen screws and the turned it clockwise until it seated and the holes lined up. With both replaced I’m still getting a 6 code. I have tried an ECM reset and hear the motor, but the dash continues to flash "–". I have tried several resets due to finding all kinds of different methods. I’m stuck and ready to roll it out of the shop and burn it! What was so wrong with the foot shift? We all used it fine for years!
I’m from Arkansas so it’s Hi Y’all. I have been a shade tree mechanic for about 20 years. I am a certified GM and Mopar mechanic. I also did side jobs with ATVs and outboard motors. I came across a 07 Honda TRX400fga with shift problems at a bargain. Now I can’t figure it out.
I was having trouble getting my belt off (bad arthritis) so I used John’s method to release the tension by loosening the 15mm nut in the middle of the secondary clutch. I removed the belt with this method and then tried to follow John’s instructions when installing new belt and re-tightening the 15mm nut.
My question is that I now notice approximately 1/8"-1/4" of the drive belt is exposed, above the secondary clutch, when the engine is NOT running. Wish I would have paid closer attention to what it looked like before I took mine off. In the video, it kind of looks like the belt is riding fairly flush with the top edge of the secondary clutch(?).
I just want to make sure that my belt won’t come flying off while riding…..especially with hard deceleration (letting off the throttle). Seems like the belt rides kind of high and has potential to fly off?
Anyone ever notice their drive belt riding that "high" on the secondary clutch?
I’m looking to buy my first sxs and looking at a ’16 Max Xrs. I was wondering about the "stiffer suspension". I will probably do some trail riding and some mild rock climbing and wondered if the suspension could be tuned down for a decent ride or is it going to beat me to death and will it flex enough for some rock climbing? I’m not going to be going real extreme since I wouldn’t want to tear up a $30k toy. Any advice?
1999 sportsman 500. Still runs, but won’t start, lights flicker when driving. Battery seems to test all right (6months old). When revving motor light got really bright, and on even blew.
Hey guys, does anybody have a defender without DPS?
My dad is looking to get one, and non dps will save him about $2000 (canada). My concern is that as he’s getting older, having DPS may not be a bad idea.
How does it drive without DPS? Do you wish you had power steering now that you have tried it out?
Hi all, lemon here from Far north Queensland in Aus. Had lots to do with grizzlys and kodiaks. Just about to pick up my first though. New griz 700, had no blue left so had to get the SE carbon colour. (Oh damn! 😉 .. look forward to gaining and giving some knowledge!
