2001 Sportsman 700 Twin. No start

I will be the first to admit that I dont know much about ATVs. I am working on my bosses atv and it will crank but will not start. It cranks but no spark. I found that the wires on the ststor were melted off so replaced stator. Still no start. Since then we have replaced regulater and ignition coil module. Still nothing. We checked the kill switch and found corrosion at the plug in. Replaced switch this morning. Still no start. Found it will start if I disconnect the black wire from kill switch to coil. As I dont have any manuals to look at I am totally lost. Can someone please point me in a direction to look?. Thank you in advance.

300 Smoking After Rebuild

Last summer my 300 was smoking, and low on power and compression. Time for a top end rebuild, pretty standard practice on a 20 year old machine. I was looking for a little more power, so I decided to go with the 317 rebuild with the Rancher piston. I did that combo on my Brothers 300 with good results.

New LA Sleeve, new Honda Piston, new Honda Rings. Sleeve pressed in and honed by local machine shop with a very good reputation that did my Brothers. I put it all back together and the rings kept sticking in the grooves on the piston causing low compression, took me a little while to figure out what was going on. With the compressed rings the piston skirt came into contact with the cylinder wall, removing the fresh cross-hatch. Not enough to feel with your finger, or a pick, but enough to visually notice the vertical lines in the correct lighting.

While the head was off I also lapped the valves, and took a flapper wheel on the Dremmel and cleaned the exhaust and intake port. Removed 20 years worth carbon build up on the valves, ports, and combustion chamber, also knocked down some casting burrs and seams. Nothing major, took my time and just in essence cleaned things up. New valve seals while I was in it.

Put it all back together and it smokes like a freight train, and is blowing oil out of the exhaust port, lots of oil. If you put your hand in front of the exhaust port it comes back splattered in oil, enough oil to drip down the exhaust studs. I figured the rings had to seat or maybe its oil from the rebuild. So I put the exhaust back on and let it idle in the yard for an hour, the smoke never decreased, the oil level dropped 1/2 a quart, and when I took the exhaust off I was able to pour oil out of the muffler.

Since then I have changed the valve seals with a brand new set, and changed the rings with a brand new set. Tested compression, about 165-170 PSI. Took the head off, filled the intake and exhaust port with oil, let each sit for 10-15 min with no draw down, and no oil coming through the valves or valve seals. Filled cylinder with oil, let sit for 30 min with no noticeable draw down.

I’m out of ideas, seems like everything I have done has ruled out the cylinder, rings, or head. But i’m obviously missing something. What could be causing this?

17 renegade xxc suspension help needed

First ride out and I find my stock shock setting to be way to stiff! A lot of the reading I’ve done seems to say to take everything down all the way and go up from there. (Counterclockwise)
The only thing I didn’t adjust much was the preload, I loosened up the preload only about a millimeter or so. This may be where most of my stiff ride is coming from but I’m afraid to go too much softer on that due to losing ground clearance and while I’m down here in the south ground clearance is pretty important but I’m also having a tough time with a stiff ride when I get into the bumpy stuff. So tried to make adjustments with rebound, high compression and low compression but seem to have created more issues then I had to begin with and not knowing where to go from there. There does not seem to be much talk on adjusting the newer xxc Renegade models. I’ve read quite a bit of talk about the xtp Outlander but not sure that’s going to be anywhere close to where I want to be because the Renegade and Outlander are two different machines and have about eighty to a hundred pound weight difference.
My last two rides have been in tight Woody trails with roots holes and crevices. Some may say to take everything back to where it was new but I didn’t write anything down and so I can’t go back plus it wasn’t anywhere close to where I wanted to be anyway. I’m about a hundred and fifty pounds with gear, I would appreciate any help or Direction. Thanks

Aluminum wheels breaking

Doing a bunch of minor upgrades for the upcoming riding season, and tires are one of the things on my list to upgrade.

I’ve seen a few threads over the past 2 years or so about the factory aluminum wheels getting holes in them from debris around the brakes etc. How much do I need to worry about this? If I need to get bigger (14in) wheels, I’ll be holding off on new tires for now since I’ll be getting beadlocks when I do go down that road.

Also, this happened last year lol.

1988 Honda 300 4×4 Engine?

Hi everyone, I just registered and this is my first thread.
I recently acquired a 1988 300 trx 4×4. It had a lot of missing parts except for the engine. I recently pulled the engine out, now I am scratching my. What do I do with this now? It is not locked up or anything, but I am no mechanic, although I get by with our cars. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you, Mark.

2005 TRX 300EX Vs 250EX Frame Size question

Is the TRX300ex on the same frame as the TRX250ex?

I found the rack I want but it’s not made for the 300ex but is for the 250ex…

This is the rack

I emailed Moose Racing and got a quick but ambiguos response. They said they didn’t know if it would fit the 300. I responded that I would be more than happy to be their test monkey if they would allow me to retrun it if there was a fit issue. They said they could not.

Any help or similar racks that you know of that I did not find is greatly appreciated.
