2009 Honda Rancher Intermittent Stutter & Death
Every now and then, particularly when I go down or up a hill (not an extreme hill, gradual), my ATV will stutter and die like its losing fuel. The kicker is that it will restart in neutral if I turn the key off, turn it back on, and start the 4 wheeler it will idle (I put a bit on the throttle just to make sure it doesnt die) but it will do fine.
However, when I put it into gear and try to take off it will stutter and die again after going a few feet. After maybe 5 minutes or so it’ll be fine and goes again.
If I keep on the throttle through everything it will ride all night through the same stuff that it died on earlier in the day.
Things I’ve checked:
1) Replaced battery (Was dead & wouldnt charge when I went to work on it this weekend.)
2) Checked 1-way clutch (Wont roll back in 1st gear)
3) I checked the fuel filter & replaced it: Old Filter Picture
4) Put dielectric grease on the fuel pump 2p power connector.
5) Fuel vent hose allows air to move through it.
6) I seem to have good fuel flow, Pumped the petcock yesterday swapping the fuel filter out and that shit came pouring till I put it back to "OFF".

When I turn to key to on, I can hear the relay click on, but I bought a spare that I can swap in case thats a known problem.
I’m going to put dielectric grease on every connection and check them before I ride this weekend, but wanted to see if yall could come up with anything else it could be.
After my ride, I’ll update with if it gave me problems or not.

Top dollar for a TRX300FW?
In 99, my father bought a brand new TRX300, in green, and I bought one, in red. I’ve used mine pretty regularily, while my father used his sparingly, during hunting season, and to travel between his house, and ours- about a mile through the mountains, on an old fire road. I maintained his ATV, but it got very little use- I would estimate that in its lifetime, it had maybe 100 miles on it. The tires still had nibs on them. It didn’t suffer from so little use, partly because he would run it enough that it didn’t sit for months, and partly because I serviced it, used Seafoam in it, and he only ran ethanol-free gas in it.
This past summer, he got the bug to get a Deere gator (6×4). He simply didn’t use the ATV much, and wanted a gator with a dump bed. We put his Honda up for sale, and waited it out. As you can imagine, we got a lot of tire kickers, wanting to give $800-$1000 for it. It was all original, barn kept, and in extraordinary shape for a 17 year old machine. Eventually, it sold for $3000.00.
I’ve got some parts listed here on the forum for sale (tires, wheels, and drum brake parts), as well as on Craigslist. On Craigslist, I have a photo of my Honda included, for reference only. I clearly stated in the ad that it isn’t for sale, I’m just showing the condition of the ATV that the parts came off of. I received an email, offering top dollar- $2600- for my ATV. Obviously, I’m not biting- it isn’t for sale, and it is too sentimental to sell it for that price. I know- I would be shooting for the moon to expect any more than what dad’s sold for. That’s not what it’s about. We lost our 17 year old son 7 years ago, and my ATV was a favorite of the family- I’ll never sell it, because it’s a connection to Seth.
I’m just curious about the top price. Evidently, my assumption about an obsolete, excellent condition 300 is incorrect. Dad was willing to wait for that one buyer who knew what they were looking at, and knew that they’d be hard pressed to buy a new ATV, for twice the price, that would measure up to the 300 in quality and durability. He did find that person, but it took hundreds of indignant tire kickers to get to that person, and quite a few insults.:icon_ goofy:
