’09 800 XT shutting off while plowing

Hi everyone,

My quad has been good in warm weather- no issues whatsoever. I purchased the quad used around a year ago to plow for winter but we really didn’t have one.

This time around we’ve finally got some plowable snow. The quad will not start in cold weather so I have to hook a tender to it ..no big deal as many do this.

So I started plowing today and within not even 30 mins of use the quad completly shut off in the middle of the driveway. I still have power but it will not fire up. My initial thought was that it overheated but I really don’t know. Voltage issue with the winch/plow? Drawing too much power? It was only about 3 inches of snow so I really wasn’t running it hard.

I let it sit for 20 mins and it fired up finally but then it did the same thing after only a few minutes this time. anyone have any Ideas?

Thanks

Hello from Lebanon

Hello everyone,

Messaging you from Lebanon after having lived for 8 years in Canada where I used to ride a Kawasaki Prairie 700.

I’m in the market for a 09+ Yamaha Grizzly (mainly 700 because I haven’t seen a single 550 here). I’ll mainly use it to go hunting and some off-roading, but nothing crazy.

I would import one from Canada/US, but there’s a flat $5k import fee in Lebanon so that’s not an option. I must buy from the local market. My budget is $7k max (including any needed work I would need to do on it initially).

The best finding so far within my budget is a 2009 Grizzly 700 FI Special Edition (RED) with 20,000 km (12,400 miles) and an asking price of $7k. However, I had my ATV mechanic friend inspect the machine and it needs a one-way bearing ($90), an outer and an inner joint ($230 + $230), an air filter ($20), and a new windshield ($230) [$800-1000 in total]. He said he could also smell some carbon so the spark plugs and injectors may need cleaning/replacement too. Anyway, we negotiated the seller down to $5.9k and he may even go as low as $5.5k when I show up with the cash, but I didn’t pull the trigger because I think that’s too much money for a 20,000 km machine.

As you can notice, parts here are much more expensive than North America.

Therefore, I don’t think I’m going to buy it, but I thought I would introduce myself and my search for a good Grizzly and ask you for tips and advice as I look into becoming a Grizzly owner.

Thank you in advance πŸ™‚

2002 Sportsman 400 speedometer – dead needle

I recently acquired a used 2002 sportsman 400 and I’m in the process of fixing a few fairly minor issues. The good news is it starts right up and runs rather well.

The speedo was completely dead and roached out with rust so I purchased a new one. It lights up now and all appears well, but the needle doesn’t move when driving. Is there any reason to think this is anything beyond needing a new wheel speed sensor?

I’ve read there are some wiring tricks to these things to keep AWD working when the speedo quits, if the previous owner did any of that, would it kill the needle function on the replacement speedo? The only thing I notice that seems odd, is that there is an in-line fuse added near the CDI area, when I pull the fuse the speedo goes dark. It has two red/blk wires coming into the fuse, and 1 red/blk heading from the fuse up to the speedo. Additionally, the red/yellow wire from the regulator that has a single barrel connection to a red/yellow wire up to the speedo had been disconnected. Should that wire be plugged back in, or is that part of the AWD bypass that might have occurred? Or maybe it’s why the needle is dead? I just paid a small fortune for the speedo so I’m afraid of zapping it! πŸ™‚

I might add that AWD did indeed work with the old roached speedo. I can’t believe it had any real functionality to it left, it was REALLY bad inside.

If anyone can shed any light on this I’d be very grateful. I’m inclined to buy a wheel speed sensor but don’t want to throw another wad of cash into something that I may not need.

Thank you!

Glamis sand dunes mid January

We will be making our third annual trip to Glamis to ride the Sandune’s for two days. We are then thinking of going to the Mojave Desert Glamis north or the Salton Sea or maybe all the way into Utah to ride. Anyone here have any experience with those areas they can give me some pointers. We are flying in from Cleveland and need to rent ATVs everywhere we go thanks in advance . Next year we are shipping the scramblers out and making two weeks out of it instead of one .

2003 Rancher 2wd to 4wd conversion

Hello all!

I took the front case off of my 2wd and put the 4wd case on it off of my donor bike. The two machine’s motors are exactly alike other than the front cases. I have read in so any places where this is not possible. It is. My Honda dealer said they didn’t know if it would work and told me to go buy a 4×4 and don’t try and make one. Well, Honda made it, i just played with it a little bit. I pulled the front a arms off with the knuckles and a right and left assy. I didn’t want to risk the a arms being different as that is very possible. Plus, i didn’t feel like fighting upper and lower ball joint nuts, so I left verything together. While it was all apart, I replaced the wheel bearings. It is easier to swap the cases than it is to swap motors. I swapped the case with the motor still in the quad.

Good luck!

Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something!!

Grizzly 550 Fi starter wires need help

Hi this is my first post, I got this bike not running from a farmer 550 Fi 2010 I think the vin is rusted

The wires on the starter were disconnected we have now put the positive from the battery on the top of the starter there seems to be another black wire there and a smaller black wire with a blade plug. at the moment when we turn it over by shorting the solenoid the smaller black wire is burning in the loom all the way to the front dash. I wonder if someone could take a pic or instruct me where the two black wires near the starter go if I put them both on the starter it slows down the cranking and heats the smaller black wire with the blade connection

any help would be good we have looked at the manual but i’m not that good with diagrams

Which GPS question

Hopefully I am posting in an appropriate section. I know there are lots of "which off road/trail GPS is best" discussions out there but many of the threads are older and things change.

What I am looking for is recommendations based on my needs which I list below.

I have a Garmin Nuvii 40 and can get a Nexus 7 tablet, I also have a Samsung S6 phone I am not adverse to using any of these devices if they’ll do what I want. I would get waterproof cover but would want to mount it on the ATV with a mount that would allow for quick R&R.

1. I want a GPS that is reliable for ATV’ing.

2. Ease of use is paramount. I love GPS but have suffered through the learning curves of the original eTrex’s. Basically I don’t want days of pain to learn how to semi use a device, and there is nothing, no feature that will overcome that.

3. Must be under $400 and be able to handle most of the downloadable maps.

4. Save my butt! I have been in the situation where I was on unfamiliar trails and losing light with little idea where I was. I want a device that can eliminate situations like that by reliably tracking me back out or better yet, show alternative quicker routes.

5. In Hatfield & McCoy and other locations some of getting from point a to b is on paved roads, so a GPS that can show paved road directions is a must

Snow on a plow

Winter in the great north is here and plow season is in full motion. I know a clean, painted plow are a great help but what other means or tricks have others done to keep snow from building up on the plow while plowing? Has anyone ever tried rubbing the blade with vegetable oil?
