Primary Sheave Question

I have a 1998 600 Grizzly. Wasn’t running when I got it, but I have it going now. Took it out this weekend and it was struggling going up hills. The motor was revving up just fine, but it just didnt have any power. In Low it was better, but still not what it should be. Got it back in the shop and pulled off the primary sheave. When I opened it up, the weights were not even in their grooves, so no way it was functioning correctly.

Questions:
1. The service manual shows that this should be lubricated. Not sure what kind and how much. I saw a video of an after market sheave and that guy used alot (I mean really ALOT) of grease in there. With my stock sheave, should I be using ALOT of grease? Any idea on what kind? Wheel bearing grease?

2. Mine did not have an o-ring seal under the cover plate, not really sure what it would seal off anyway. Is the seal really needed?

Thanks

New ATV owner with newbie questions – 2007 Sportsman 500

Hello fellas,

I’m a new ATV owner and have some stupid questions, so I will apologize in advance for knowing next to nothing. I’m a 39 year old Minnesota native and have a: 2007 Sportsman 500 H.O. that I use for hunting, giving rides to my two young boys, and primarily use as an ice fishing machine.

I did a couple searches but thought I would say hello and see if anyone has any quick links.

Is there a how-to video about oil changes and basic maintenance or a thread of "stuff that’s good to know" for newbie owners? Do these things like particular types of oil?

If I wanted some replacement parts for the machine, suggestions for sites/vendors? Example – he small piece of expanded metal that protects the front end is dented and starting to rust.

The starter in the machine chatters when it’s running. Any threads that deal with fixing that?

Is there a cheap/easy way to replace the fuel-gauge sending unit? Mine shows that the tank is nearly empty regardless of fuel level.

Finally, other than basic exhaust wrap, suggestions for keeping the heat from the exhaust from melting the plastic on the right side of the machine?

Thanks in advance!!!
Ted from Minnesota.

New guy of the day

Hello everyone, I’m new.
My name is Mike and I live in VA.
Thanks already for all of the great information on the forum. I look forward to spending some time learning from you.
I just bought a Polaris ATV and I haven’t even figured out what it is yet. It has some problems that I need to fix but it runs great and the price was right. It’s old, it has a 35 year badge on it but that’s it. I’m still looking for the vin.

Anyway, I’m a motorcycle guy and just learning about atvs.

Merry Christmas!

Grizzly 450 frame damage from plowing?

Hello all:

I have a 2014 grizzly 450 I use for plowing my driveway. My plowing rig is the warn provantage front mount. Last night, after I got done plowing, I noticed the frame members that the plow’s front mount bracket are attached to are starting to flatten where it meets the bracket (toward the lower part of bracket). They are not bent, just flattened. It looks as if the bottom of the bracket made an indent in the tube. The bottom U-bolts were also missing on one side and loose on the other. Top U-bolts are tight. It’s the same situation on both sides.

When I plow, sometimes the blade will catch on the ground (transition from pavement to grass) and trip the blade forward. This causes the machine to annoyingly jar and stop but I’m not going that fast when it happens and I would think the blade tripping would be enough safeguard from frame damage. Every time it happens I cringe and think about the forces transferring to the machine.

Anyone else notice this? Could it be from catching the ground? Too tight of U-bolts? I don’t remember this happening when I installed it. Should I worry? Is the blade tilted too far forward or rearward? I fear I may be damaging my frame. I feel like the "crushing" of the tubes have contributed to the loose / missing U-bolts… they could have vibrated loose but I’d think the upper bolts would have done this as well.

I just don’t want to continue plowing with it and risk it flattening that tube to the point of allowing it to bend.

Any help or insight would be great!

Thanks.

Power to solenoid, no power to starter

Hello all,

This is my first post, lot of good info on this site. I’m hoping someone can get me over the hump and tell me what I’m looking at. Started up my 2012 sportsman 500 HO automatic yesterday to plow, no problems. Tried to start it this morning to plow, just heard ‘click’. Lights/dash all have power, checked the voltage to the solenoid and it was fine, but none coming out when I turn the key. Thought maybe it was a safety switch of some kind, then I saw this when I was looking at the starter connection. That red boot is the starter connection. My question is what is that that broke off, some kind of ground connection? That housing is connected to a bracket which connects to the frame. I tried to touch them together and start it but still click. Can anyone tell me what that does and if it may be the source of my problem? Much appreciated!
