What do you regret?

Just finished an article about items that have been sold, traded etc. throughout the authors life. It got me to thinking about things I have let "get away." First I think of my sisters Honda z50 mini bike my dad gave to a neighbor kid that I thought I was in line for but it was replaced with a 82 Honda 3 wheeler. Another thing I remember was some comic books I traded a kid and he got the way better deal. Also remember me and a friend destroying my "hot wheels" with a hammer and thinking that it was fun? My biggest is selling my 86 big red cause I "really didn’t need it" and I had a new 91 300 and could only ride "one at a time." So what are some of y’alls regrets?

2007 sportsman 800 rod knock

picked up an 07 sportsman 800 from a co worker. its in very good shape, ridden by his girlfirend, 1266 miles, has a lower end knock.

what should i do? rebuild or replace with a good used motor?

i have the knowlendge/expereince to rebuild, and have no problem throwing in a crank/rods. but i literally know nothing about these Polaris’s. are the engines good enough that i could just throw a good used one in and be good, or rebuild with stock parts? or are there any weak points on these motors that i would be better off rebuilding myself and attending to any issues prematurely?

its pretty much just gonna be a trail rig. i am known to whoop on my toys, but maintain them religiously.

thanks.

Tracks on a 16 450 h.o?

Hi guys I have a 2016 sportsman 450. I was thinking of buying a set of tracks for it. Does it have the power to turn the tracks? Track companies claim to make tracks to work down to 300cc atvs. I plan on snow plowing with it and a few ice fishing trips. I have a beater sled and don’t feel like spending the extra on insurance and storing it. I read tracks are tough on atvs and wear out and break parts prematurely. I only plan on putting a couple hundred miles at the most with tracks a year. Does it really wear it that much? Or do I just cough up the money and keep the old sled around?

Difficulty shifting for new Sportsman…

So, I’ll start by saying I read a lot of reviews on the Sportsman 570 before I bought mine. I has two concerns. One was heat, and the other was possibly needing shims installed to fix the "very hard to shift into gear issue". When I got my new quad home and was taking it off the trailer, I had a heck of a time getting it into gear. I was sick at my stomach. Brand new, and I thought I’d have to take it to the shop.

Well, I rode it a couple of times and found that the problem wasn’t consistent, but just kind of random. I thought maybe it just needed to be "broke in". Still worrying about it, as I worry too much anyways, today I called a local dealership and talked to their service manager. He was perhaps the nicest service manager I’ve ever talked to. lol I explained my issue and concerns and asked if he thought the shims are what I needed. He told me that the newer quads (Not sure if he was referring to 2016-2017, or just 2017) have a different setup and there is actually no "shimming" abilities on them. He offered these two pieces of advice to reduce or eliminate the hard shifting:

1. When stopping, always set the parking break BEFORE putting the bike into Park, especially if on any kind of slope. This keeps some of the lateral pressure off the gears allowing an easier shift.
2. When first starting out, let the bike idle for a minute. The bike will usually idle around 1400 and then slow down to around 1200-1250. Waiting for that slower idle may also allow for an easier shift.

Now, obviously most of you have a lot more experience in these quads than I do, and I’m sure some of you have more experience than that service manager as well. Maybe this is common knowledge, maybe it’s not true… but I believe these two bits of information seem to help. So for anyone else who may be new, maybe it will help. I’m coming from sport quads, so this was kind of new to me. Just wanted to pass that along.

Replaceing Transmission front drive seal

So now that i have the right oil, I need to fix the oil leak.

It looks like it is coming from the seal for the front drive shaft at the transmission, not the front diff.
The U joint is covered in oil and you can see how it has thrown oil as it spins.

Has anyone replaced this? How easy to remove the front drive shaft, can i do it from the top or bottom?

Any help would be great. I have the downloadable manual and will be searching it.

Thanks.
