New comer, Hello All!

Hello everyone,

I am new to the ATV world all around other then some limited experience fixing them here and there.

By profession i am a Mechanic in the diesel world and am also attending college for Diesel mechanic/technician. I am not new to working on things but decided that a new path was needed and went to school.

Any advice and help with things will be appreciated, i also started a thread with a ATV i need some help on and look forward to talking to you.

Thank you

Polaris 400 xplorer 2 stroke info

Hello, i am new to the forum.

i am fixing a 400 for a friend of a friend type deal.
i was told that it has been sitting 4 years, needs a battery and carb cleaned. it was at some point at a dealer and some switch was replaced but unknown as to what was really done.

it has several issues i am attending to.

things i have already handled
replaced battery
made new positive battery cable
soldered new end on negative cable and heat shrunk
soldered broken throttle warmer wires together
cleaned and remounted starter solenoid.
pulled carb and gave it a cleaning, need to get new oil line before remounting.
sprayed cylinder with wd 40 to hopefully prevent or lossen up any stuck piston rings.

things that still need attention:
hand warmers
fog lights, rear light
exhaust leak at engine mounting point.
that is all i can see at this time but could be more as things go along.

i am a bit new to the atv world but i am a professional mechanic so not afraid to dig into things.

what i am having issues with are the hand warmers and throttle warmer. i have traced the wires down to the "board" for lack of better term. i see that it has a switch(mounted onto plastic fairing) that has three positions, and assume that is is supposed to be off,low and high heat?

now the wires are running from the switch to the board to a resistor and back to the board if i am looking at it correctly. i would think that it should be one of the wires coming off the resistor should go to the warmers/ one side of switch? BOTH hand warmers need to be replaced at some point i just want to understand how it is supposed to work.

what i see is 1 of the black wires that should supply the circuit is unhooked but where all the black wires go to on the board there is no power. i have a red with black stripe wire that has power but is is hooked into the engine off sw that grounds the coil. that meaning it is also key on power.

now i could just hook all that up and see what happens but i am unsure where some of those black wires are going. if needed i can provide pictures.

I also do not know how to find the year for this machine so if you could help me with that. then could you point me to a wiring diagram?

thank you for your time in advance.

Scrambler 500 4×4 troubleshooting

Just picked up a ’02 Scrambler 500 4×4 and noticed while in the snow the front wheels don’t spin at all, even while the backs are. Besides selecting the AWD button is there any other tricks?

I added the fluid to the hub’s. I also noticed there is an intermittent whine coming from the front wheel area when I slow down, possibly while turning after slowing down.

Suggestions?

Hard Surface Tires

Can anyone advise or point me in the right direction for hard surface tires? My wheel size is 14" and currently fitted with 26×8 front and 26×10 rear ITP all terrain tires. I’m told the lugs will wear down quickly on hard surfaces.

What little exploring I have done so far finds hard surface tires for 12" diameter wheels. I haven’t found any for the larger 14" wheels yet.

What would you recommend?

Home made foot rests

Hey there. I ride quite a bit with my kids, and after looking around for some foot rests, I couldn’t find anything that was adjustable, didn’t take up floorboard space, didn’t require drilling into the plastic, or didn’t cost a fortune. So off I went to the hardware store to pick up some schedule 40 PVC pipe, a bunch of connectors, and some pipe insulation, and I came up with this.

All in all, it was only about a two beer job, but may require a few more if you’re a do-it-on-the-fly type of DIYer. LOL. Anyhow, I hope this helps someone out there.

Maintenance Soon Hi Cogswell Motor (Whats that)

Hey guys & girls Just want to stop by and say hello. Brief history about my self/situation. I had a Yamaha raptor 660 bored out to right at 700 in mint condition basically brand new. Only about 10 hrs on fresh rebuild. (not complainin just explainin LOL) We had a house fire (electrical) 11/9/16 We had to move out while house gets rebuilt. 12/5/16 our contractors said we have been robbed. So sometime over the weekend someone stole my 18′ trailer, broke into my locked shed and stole my Raptor along with a bunch of other things like big oxy/acetylene tanks with torches and hoses, propane heater 150,000 BTU, Weedeaters and self propelled lawn mowers etc.etc. All behind a locked fence. Now on to the good news.
I always thought once this ATV bites the dust or something happens Id like to get a 4×4….Well here ya go.

I bought a 2008 Outlander 800 4×4 Hadnt had time to ride it yet but this thing is a beast!!!! Insurance gave me $3200 and I bought this for $3200 So its not the best of shape there’s several little maintenance things that it needs. Like the rubber boots on the intake and exhaust on the CVT, Valve covers are leaking a little, I have a maintenance light that says " Maintenance Soon Hi Cogswell Motor" Which I will have to post and find out exactly what that is. And a few other odds and ends. I already bought a service manual. But other than this beast is in pretty good/fair condition. Starts right up runs good (I didnt really get to run it as hard as I wanted due to it being snowy/icy the day I test drove it.

Looking forward to talking to you guys and learning more about these machines!!!

I have a youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/2LateIWon/videos that I will post these how to fix it videos on to hopefully help people out in the future. Feel free to stop by and say hi there as well. (There is also videos of the house fire damage as well
