New guy in western NY

I just got my first ATV and I jumped in with both feet.

It’s a 2014 Sportsman 850 HO LE in pearl white. Didn’t know how special it was until reading a review after I got the machine. I was looking for something with 4X4 and a snow plow. I live on a hill side over looking a Finger Lake and we get around 10 foot of snow yearly.

Need help clutching

Hey everyone finally made an account on GC been looking at these forums for awhile and i had a few questions about my grizzly. I recently bought 28" outlaw 2 skinny wide combo tires with 14" vision 550 wheels and hopefully am getting them by the end of the week. I haven’t touched my clutch and have been trying to find a post on what to do to help it in the mud. More than 75% of my riding is in mud the rest is trails getting to the mud what kinda mods should i do to help the griz get going through and spinning the tires easier? i know i wanna shim it but not sure about what else any input helps (totally new to clutching so easy with the slang :icon_ goofy: ) Thanks everyone!

’14 XP850 Drive Train “Lurch” Ideas

Machine has approx. 750 mi, SPI clutch kit, MudLite XTRs on SPI rims, otherwise mechanically stock.

When driving slow (approx. 5-10 mph on a hard surface, like pavement), in Low Gear, 2WD, as I "tour" the neighborhood, there is a lurch or surge in the drive line. It feels like the lurch/surge felt on a snowmobile when the drive belt has been "hour glassed" or has a narrow spot due to a slipping clutch. OR perhaps a there is a "flat spot" on one of the tires. Drive faster or on dirt (at any speed), no apparent issue felt. Previous rides out included light duty plowing and low weight towing both in low gear.

Replaced the drive belt. No change.

Thinking more, seams to correlate to rotation of the tires. Verified 6 psi in all tires. Going to check the CV boots and tires for any damage (thinking damaged boot, water or snow inside, corroded/damaged joint) and try to confirm if directly correlated to wheel rotation (like every full turn of the tire gets a lurch).

Other ideas on where to look ? Thanks in advance !

Clutching for extra weight?

Should you change clutching for extra weight of tires and rims? I switched from stock to ITP EVO’s and 212 rims. When I mounted them I noticed a pretty hefty weight difference so I weighed them. Fronts were 20lbs stock, and 36.5 new. Rears were 22lbs stock and 42 on the new tires and rims. Old tires were 25" now they are 26". So that’s a total of 73lbs more of rolling mass. I get the changing of clutching for bigger tires, but what about the weight alone. I gotta believe that even if I went with 25" tires, they would still be around 70lbs heavier than stock.
