Electrical issues

Last week I pulled off all the panels in preparation for some preventative maintenance. After I had all the panels off and most of the dead leaves removed from various openings in the chassis, I decided to ride around the yard real quick to warm up the oil so I can change it.

During the ride I heard a pop and looked back to see a cloud of smoke, I hopped off and shut down the ATV. Wouldn’t you know it, electrical fire. After the fire went out I looked around to make sure nothing else was burning (on the ATV or in my yard) Well the ATV started and I was able to drive it back to the house and started to inspect the damage.

Looks like the 2 terminals pulled out of the connector to the voltage regulator and made contact, this quickly burned off the insulation to the wires and any nearby wires as well. Not too bad I can fix this.

I just got all the wires replaced tonight, had to do some googling to try and figure out how the voltage regulator is connected, best I could tell the hot wire is the inside connector and the ground on the outside. All the wires hooked up, let’s connect the battery, and start the ATV. All of a sudden, the VR starts smoking and pops, I disconnected the battery again.

I don’t know if I wired the VR correctly or if it was damaged somehow, luckily I had a multi-meter connected to the battery, only 12 volts on and off. I also did a diode check from the starter solenoid terminals, OL one way .5 ohms the other. (the diode wrapping had a burn mark on it is why I checked) I would of loved to have an electrical schematic but I couldn’t find one online, at least, not for free.

I made a schematic showing how I rewired everything, since the only damage was aft the ground post I only illustrated from there back. Red lines are what I replaced. Of course, without a technical schematic to go off of, this is how I assumed it was wired. If anyone has a schematic for the outlander 500 dps 2015, I would appreciate it. Or at least someone tell me if the VR is wired correctly.

Honda warranty

I have a 2013 Rubicon 500 and the bung on the oil drain broke in half. what are the odds of warranty covering something like this? When I bought the bike 4 year warranty and said they would cover any and everything.(lol).

Howdy from North Texas

Glad to be here. I mostly read other’s posts to find what I am looking for. This is my first Yamaha. I have owned many Honda motorcycles and ATV’s. We still own three Ranchers (2001, 2007, 2016), one 2016 Rubicon, and a 2008 TRX90 for the little ones.

I wanted a little more power to turn Outlaw Radials than my Rubicon has. But I also wanted Honda reliability. So, in my opinion, Polaris(had one, bad experience) and Can Am were out. I have had two Kawasaki ATV’s (Prairie and Brute Force) and the Honda reliability definitely wasn’t there. I have some experience with other people’s Yamaha dirt bikes and ATV’s, so I have noticed the reliability in this brand.

Anyway, thanks for all of the information I found while lurking on this forum. I am not a Yamaha subject matter expert, so I plan to stay in my lane and learn from others.

Hello from Northeast Pa…

Long time background lurker, and now have time to join. I have a 1998 magnum 4×4 1,100mi. I bought new off of showroom floor in 98. I live right next to the Poconos of Pa. so back in 98-99, we would ride for a whole weekends. Then people went and started families, bought houses, careers. And weekend quad riding turned into a trailer on back with rakes and shovels, and a plow on front. I’m in the process of doing some much needed maintenance, so I know I’ll be needing some expert advice to point me right direction. Thanks…

visco-lok

i am new to the visco-lok thing but it seems really good on my 570, i am impressed so far. nothing too technical yet but alot of mud and water.

anyone have any problems with their visco-lok?

Help please

Went to do the shim mod back on used a impact to get it snug and then I used a torque wrench to make sure and it was but then I took it off and now the sleeve won’t come off and its hard to spin by hand. Did I mess something up

Bent tie rod

So I bent my tie rod and steering column. The column I just bent back and has been ok. The tie rod needs replacing. Should I go after market or oem?
And I’ve heard the oem ball joints at the end of the tie rods are the best.
So any suggestions?
