TRX400FA engine noise

Non-mechanic question here:
I bought my 400FA used. It’s a 2006.
I knew the engine was a little noisy going into it, but from what I read, they can still be used for years in this condition. It runs great otherwise and I use it mainly for work around the property.

My last oil change was the recommended honda oil… not too many miles ago.

The other day I went trail riding for the first time. I noticed a few things and wanted to see if anyone could diagnose for me. I also learned that wow – these are very capable machines!

1) After going hard throttle, it smokes when I ease off the throttle.
2) Two times I had a "chugging" of the engine, with no power, when starting out after a minute of idling. it was short lived and after a moment, I was running like normal.
3) At hard throttle, my engine has a new "tap" to it that it didn’t have before,

I’m about to do an oil change as it’s looking darker now.

Getting in deep!

I think we need a page for photos of things that didn’t go according to plan!

I was riding at a friends cabin, after 4 or 5 guys had gone across a wet spot and tore it up I decided I would go around the other side where it looked a bit more solid…………….they didn’t tell me that’s the area where they tore it up last summer!

After jumping off to hook up a tow strap, my feet got stuck in the muck and I went swimming!

400EX timing chain and sprockets upgrade 450r

I bought a ’99 400ex that needs some work… Has timing chain noise and is worn to the limits. I have ready you can put a 450r timing chain on it and it’s a good upgrade. I’m wondering what sprockets I should use? Seems like a bad idea to keep the originals where my chain is worn. Do I use 450r sprockets or just order a set of originals. Seems to have plenty of power… Anything else I should change while I am in there?
