Dash problem?

Hi, I have a 2013 sportsman 500 HO. The gear indicator on my dash is reading incorrectly. For example, when in High the indicator will sometimes indicate N for neutral or sometimes R for reverse. Sometimes noting at all when in High. The biggest problem is when it indicates R for reverse when in high…the rev limiter cuts in as if in reverse. Sometimes it happens when driving along in high.

What could be the problem here? In the dash or I’m thinking it’s the sensor or whatever it is on the right side of transmission where the gear rods attach to.

Any helpe to point me in the right direction would be noce.

’95 TRX300 Fourtrax rebuild

New member, and yes, I did post in the welcome section:icon_ peace:

Picked up a ’95 TRX300FW that’s in sad shape to restore/rebuild. Poor thing had been well abused, rode hard and put up wet!! Wish people would take better care of things, but that’s another story..

Got the whole thing torn down to bare frame. Of course, EVERY bearing except the front diff has to be replaced (steering bearing was completely gone, except for the outer ring which was still in the frame), no brakes, brake drums were still full of nice, brown, muddy slush-water as was the rear diff. Engine had no compression, bent intake valve because it kissed the piston. Believe it or not, the bore mic’s well in spec, and isn’t bad at all. Rings were stuck, and the stock piston and pin were worn out. Bottom end seems to be in great shape, considering everything else!
First question I have- the cam that is in this engine measures 1.420" tall side/ 1.189" short side, for a valve lift of 0.231". Service manual says it should measure 1.3901-1.3964 on "lobe height"..yet I got 1.420. Is this the right cam?? Only casting marks on the cam are an "H" and a "K". To me, lobes look pretty worn, but possibly still useable, if it is in fact the right cam.
Timing chain doesn’t appear to be stretched, but the timing chain guides are worn out. I checked the cam timing before I took everything apart, looked like it was timed properly, and even though the cam guides were worn the cam chain still had nice tension, so I don’t think it jumped time. I’m thinking someone either put in the wrong camshaft, or maybe overrevved it causing the intake valve to hit the piston? Valve springs are shot, btw..
Second question..I’d really rather have a 2wd than a 4wd. Don’t do much mud riding, caused too much damage! Torn down too many that were killed by mud, and I’d rather trail ride anyway..a little mud I can handle, but I’m not into trying to cross stuff Bigfoot would be scared of! Would I be better off parting this thing out, or just part out the 4wd parts, swap the side cover and drive/drive housing and a-arms/knuckles for 2wd stuff, or just rebuild it as a 4wd and live with the hard steering and 4wd handling?
Was thinking about a 420 Rancher knuckle-disc brake conversion if I converted it to 2wd..
Anyways, if any of y’all have any other input, I’d appreciate it! This is my first utility quad restore, I’ve done 3 LT250R Quadracers, 3 Warriors, a Blaster (disposible ATV haha), and a couple dirt bike restores over the years..I enjoy bringing them back from the dead!
Thanks in advance!

New member from South MS- TRX300FW restore

New member from Hattiesburg, MS area..recently picked up a well worn and abused ’95 TRX300FW to restore for trail riding and to use as a pit bike for my drag car.
Just a little background..over the years, I’ve owned several dirt bikes and quads, everything from a ’93 CR250R, ’89 KDX200, ’89 RM125, ’85 XL100, ’85 XR200, ’86 DR250, Y-brand Blaster in the early ’90s, to three or four Warriors, a Big Bear, a 2000(?) Rancher ES 2wd, three LT250Rs, and probably a couple more I forgot about (hey, memory started going south when I hit 40!!).
I’ve completely restored 3 LT250R quadracers (i love old 2 strokes), a couple Warriors, and have completely rebuilt several ATV and dirt bike engines, from split case all the way up rebuilds on just about any style dirt bike or atv engine (from air cooled 2 stroke up).
I’ve been into drag racing (bracket racing in particular) since the 1990, currently race a 1969 Chevelle powered by a 496/powerglide, runs 6.60s in the 1/8th and 10.70s quarter mile. I went to vocational school for automotive machine shop work, and did that for several years until I figured out the only way to make money doing machine work is to own your own shop, and considering the cost of shop equipment..well, I ain’t going to be able to do that EVER!
This is the first utility ATV I’ve ever restored, and from searching, this forum looks like the a-1 spot to get tech info on TRX300s…so here I am, and have patience with me and my stupid questions! Thanks in advance!

A arm bushings

Are the front and rear A arm bushings the same ? 2002 sportsman 500. I replaced my front ones with delrin ones. Need to do back but don’t think I need a whole kit. I haven’t seen where I can just get rear bushings.

2005 350 Rancher 2wd wont start off the button

I bought a 2005 Rancher back in 2005 at the dealer. Never really rode it very much and then i bought a Teryx and sorta just left it out in the weather. Big mistake. well ive had to redo just about everything on it and I now have it about 90% back to original except it will not start off the button. The switch is new, the key switch is new, new battery, new solenoid. So if you cross over the solenoid over with a screw driver it will start up and I actually took my first ride on it this evening 6-2-16. the atv will shut off by using the key switch or the on/off switch. does anyone have a clue what is wrong? Do i have a broke wire? loose connection. My fuse box looks very shotty and rough. could that be the problem?

Hey Im new to the Forum

Saying hello from the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. i have a yellow 2005 Honda Rancher 2wd. i bought it new and for the past several years after buying a Teryx i sorta quit riding it and left it out in the weather… Big Mistake.. IM having to re-do everything on it but I actually took my first ride in a mighty long time on it this evening. 6-2-16.

Picked up my 2016 sportsman 850 today!!!

Finally pulled the trigger on a new 2016 white sportsman 850 today. Pretty excited…. got it for 7600. I know that is higher then prices I’ve seen other members get on the forums. In Colorado it seems all toys go for a lot more then other parts of the country. regardless im excited to get out and ride and have some fun this summer.
