450 sportsman intermitant studder

I have a 2006 sportsman 450 with 1200 miles have had it for 4 years and last spring (2015) it started acting up. once its warm you sometimes have to feather the throttle several times to get it to going otherwise it will just start to studder and not go anywhere. Also doesn’t like hills will studder going up hill and the only way to get it to go is to stop let it idle for a minute. Then it will go about a hundred feet and studdering again.

I am getting very frustrated with it. I’ve have had it to two dealer about six different times and spent over $1500 trying to figure it out with little improvement. About ready to part it out and buy a different brand atv.

Blew both low beam lights, over-voltage?

Took a quick spin tonight. Was running in low gear up a hill at around 5000rpm and nailed the throttle. Both low beams went out at the same time and the check engine light on the cluster came on for 2-3 seconds and went off. High beam still worked (and I have a light bar). Got home no problem. Check fuses, relay, etc. With no issues. Looked at the bulbs and both left and right are blown. seems odd the fuse didn’t blow, but I guess the fuse is rated for all 3 lights and with only two on, a power spike wouldn’t kill the fuse.

Anybody have this happen? Everything seems to function fine now. I just ordered some new lights. What could be the issue?

Nostalgia Build

I bought a new 350 back early 90’s. It was a beast in it’s day, making the common Honda 300 look bad. I soon rebuilt it due to a rubbing of the radiator hose causing a leak of the coolant. I sold it to a friend who hardly ever rode it and kept it under a shed. Well, after 20 years, I bought it back today. It is in great shape. LOL, the last time it was ran, we pulled it in because it ran out of gas. The carb should be clean. I have been looking for a basic machine to build for a mudder. I have other fourwheelers but wanted a good foundation for a mudder. I think this one is the one. Several reasons, Good solid frame, big open wheel wells, simple basic easy to work on with hardly any electronics, many zerks to keep things from wearing. High ground clearance because of no differiential, large radiator, and chain drive. Chain drive being the main thing that caused me to buy this machine back. Reason being that I can change the gearing for larger tires by changing sprocket size. So, I will have questions that I hope to ask here. I will keep everything in this thread along with pictures. Any help will be much appreciated. To start with, I don’t trust the oil injection. I will bypass and remove it.
What mixture should I run?
Any good sources of info I should know about?
Are parts hard to find?
Anybody built one before? lifted, large tires
Open up of restricted exhaust and rejet?

Idles fine, Drives fine, When Hot – miss/backfires when revving

Someone is going to know exactly what is going on here. I cant seem to put together the right combination of words to filter out all the other carb setting issues.

2005 Honda TRX400EX

Current Issue:
Starts Fine (needs no choke, 70 degree weather)
Idles, revs, and sounds awesome (to me), great throttle response, after starting, in neutral
Under load, driving around, also seems great to me. (these things are crazy!)
After romping around on it for a few minutes, when I park it, put it back in neutral and rev it… misfires and pops from the exhaust
Start driving it and it seems okay. Let it cool and it seems okay.

Back Story:
Friends quad
Had “carb problems about 4 years ago
Couldn’t figure out how to get the carb out to spray-clean it
Let it sit with gas in tan and valve “on” for 4 years
I arrange to take a look at it
Float needle is glued into the seat
After soaking, am able to carefully pry it out
Soak the carb for several hours after removing the parts
Install rebuild kit, setting pilot to 2.5 off the seat and needle clip to center position
Reinstall in quad
IT Starts! (my first carb maintenance of any kind), but only idles, ,misfires/sputters when revved
Take it back out, move needle clip one step towards the point (more open)
Put it all back in the quad and now we are at the current issue. Just when I thought it was running perfect.

2R Racing exhaust tip too loud

Well it looks like I will be going back to my stock exhaust tip. My daughter says it is too loud to ride, and the wife says it sounds like the machine is broken. Personally I kind of like the sound, but it is a lot louder than I was expecting. My riding buddies say it is loud when I am in front of them.
Anyone want a good deal on a lightly used black anodized tip?
