Advice on Motorcycles

Hey guys, after a busy summer working, quading, and fishing I’ve started thinking about buying a motorcycle. I’m thinking that it would make longer trips far more enjoyable, and I would save quite a bit on fuel for the everyday things to and around town with it. I’ve been talking to a guy at the dealership I work at and he has a suzuki vx800 for sale for $2500. I know the guy and completely trust that everything is mechanically sound on it, and I took a drive on it today and it felt great.

Now, this seems like the perfect bike for me, but being a fairly new rider and having only rode 2 dirt bikes for a short time and then this test drive on the vx800, I’ve been warned that this is far too much bike for me. I find this crazy, seeing as I test drove it and the weight of the bike felt fine and the power was completely controllable, so I’m bit lost as to what to do in that regard. I’ve been recommended to insteadgo with something like a kawasaki ninja 300 or a small dual purpose bike to compliment my hobby of going fishing every chance I get. Although this seems reasonable for me starting off, I think I will just find myself soon wanting a bike more suited for more highway riding and longer trips.

I was just wondering what the gc community had to say about this. I’ve always received great advice here so I figure its worth a try to test everyone’s knowledge on motorcycles before jumping into it :gcrules:
I’m completely new to almost everything about this, so any advice whatsoever related to bikes would be greatly appreciated, whether its specifically for my case or more for riding in general. Thanks guys!
